HLHSCI 100 Health Education

Surveys the physical, emotional, social, intellectual, environmental, and spiritual dimensions of health. Health topics will include nutrition, physical activity/exercise/fitness, weight control, eating disorders and body image, media influences, mental health, stress, violence, substance use/abuse, sexuality and sexual orientation, sexually transmitted infections, reproductive choices/contraception, relationships, disease prevention, environment, health care, aging, and general public health issues. An emphasis will be placed on prevention strategies, lifestyle behavior change techniques, and the knowledge and skills necessary to implement lifestyle behaviors to improve health and well-being.

HLHSCI 101 Introduction to Health &  Healthcare Careers

3 Units; 54 hours lecture; CSU; C-ID PHS 105

Offered in Fall/Spring; also via Dual Enrollment

Provides an overview of health care careers and their respective career paths, educational and skill requirements, and professional responsibilities. Basic skills required by health-related careers, such as emphasizing personal attributes, demonstrating professionalism, engaging in teamwork, and building communication skills will be covered. Students will be assisted in making educational and career decisions for a wide variety of health care occupations.

HLHSCI 113 SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, DISPARITIES AND EQUITIES

Offered in Fall/Spring

Examines personal and social determinants of health through the examination of the role individuals play in their own health and wellbeing, along with the impact of environmental, social, structural, and cultural factors that play a role both in individual and community and public health. Health disparities and inequities in sexually diverse, gender, racial, and traditionally marginalized populations will be explored, and culturally competent ideas to bridge the health equity gap and improve population health will be developed.

HLHSCI 140 Introduction to Public Health

Introduces the discipline of public health including terminology, the role of public health agencies in society, public health professions, epidemiology, healthcare policy and management.

HLHSCI 149 Nutrition for Fitness & Balanced Living

2 units; 36 hours lecture; UC:CSU

Offered in Fall

Examines the psycho-biological, cultural, social, cognitive, and environmental factors that influence a person’s eating, physical activity behaviors, and body image. Provides practical strategies to promote healthy attitudes and behaviors.

HLHSCI 150 Introduction to Nutrition Science

Scientific concepts of nutrition related to the function of nutrients in basic life processes and current health issues with emphasis on individual needs.

HLHSCI 243 Women’s Health

3 units; 54 hours lecture; UC:CSU; C-ID PHS 116

Offered year round

Analyzes the biological, psychological, and sociocultural aspects of women's health, and explores health services, health education, and healthcare delivery systems. Social determinants of health and health inequities are examined, as well as contemporary issues relating to LGBTQ+ rights, racism, ageism, gender stereotypes and gender roles, politics, and the role of women in the family, workforce, community, and society. Strategies for social and political change are developed.

HLHSCI 249 Medical Terminology

3 units; 54 hours lecture; CSU; CID HITS 103X

Offered year round

Presents a comprehensive study of medical terminology, emphasizing determining meanings by dividing words into their component parts. Basic anatomy and physiology are discussed. Correct spelling, pronunciation and meaning of common medical terms related to individual body systems, clinical procedures, laboratory tests and pathological conditions are covered.
