Program Types
Schools abroad usually offer some of their courses and programs in English to international applicants in three formats explained below. If you have another language fluency at the academic level, you are not limited to classes and programs offered in English. Summer offerings usually include some academic content and lots of cultural activities such as sightseeing, sampling local cuisine, hiking, and cultural differences. Very few institutions offer winter programs.
Exchange ProgramsA program involving the reciprocal exchange of students, usually limited to 1 student a semester per agreement details. Keep in mind that not every of our partner universities participates in exchange programs, and we may not have student exchange agreements with every of our partners. Spaces for any exchange program will be limited, and the numbers may vary from term to term depending on the terms of our current mutual agreements and. Exchange programs may have a built-in scholarship, given that accepted students in this type of program will not be responsible for paying tuition at the host institution. However, students are responsible for other fees, such as airfare, housing, health insurance, associated academic costs, etc. Credit transfer back to COC is possible but not guaranteed. In sum, the program entails the following:
- 1:1 student exchange with partner universities abroad

An academic program that takes place outside the United States, lasting a semester or less. In general, COC students will pay tuition/fees for programs with partner institutions, and some will offer reductions of tuition/fees that vary from institution to institution. Most of our partners offer scholarships that you apply for after you have been accepted. Students will be responsible for other costs, such as airfare, housing, living costs, health insurance, etc. Course credits/units transfer back to COC is possible but not guaranteed. To summarize, the programs include the following:
- Functions similarly to an Exchange Program (above), but without the built-in tuition reduction/waiver that Exchange programs generally include.
- Possible reduction of tuition/fees with partner universities
- Duration of stay abroad lasts between 10 days and a semester
- Possible credit transfer
Transfer to a university outside the United States to complete a bachelor's degree. Students apply directly to the university to be considered for admission and have the possibility of receiving reduced tuition and/or scholarships offered by that institution. Some institutions participate in the U.S. Title IV programs, meaning students can use their Federal Student Aid to finance their education abroad. Students can choose from universities that offer a U.S. degree, a foreign degree only, or a degree with dual recognition (where students earn a foreign degree which is also recognized by US accrediting bodies). Options include American universities abroad, foreign universities, and hybrids of the two. In sum, a student who chooses this track may:
- Complete their B.A./B.S. outside the U.S.
- Transfer their COC credits to the partner university, subject to the partner's discretion.
- Work, subject to local rules and regulations.
