College Chosen as National Park Ambassadors

Oct. 7, 2025 – College of the Canyons has been selected to join the 2025–26 class of National Park Trust College Ambassadors, standing out as the only community college among a prestigious group of universities nationwide. Other participants include Harvard University, Georgetown University, and 15 others. The program equips students to lead outdoor initiatives on their campuses while gaining practical, hands-on experience in the park and outdoor industries.

Oct. 7: Free Financial Aid Workshop

Oct. 1, 2025 – The College of the Canyons Financial Aid Office will host its annual Cash for College workshop from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public. Designed for students and parents, the workshop will focus on completing financial aid applications (such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid), eligibility requirements, and a full range of financial aid options.

Faculty Member Honored with NEA Award

Sept. 30, 2025 – Wendy Brill-Wynkoop, chair of the College of the Canyons Photography Department, has been named a 2026 National Education Association (NEA) Foundation Global Learning Fellowship Travelers Award recipient for California, joining a cohort of just 48 educators nationwide. The NEA Foundation Travelers Award recognizes educators who exemplify excellence in teaching, advocacy for the profession, commitment to equity and opportunity, community engagement, and leadership in professional development.

Procurement Team Earns National Award

Sept. 29, 2025 – For the fifth year in a row, the College of the Canyons Contracts, Procurement, and Risk Management Department has been honored with the Annual Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award from the National Procurement Institute. The recognition places the college among 216 organizations nationwide — and one of only 15 higher education institutions in the U.S. and Canada — to receive the award in 2025.

College Receives Golden Globe Grant

Sept. 17, 2025 – The Golden Globe Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to College of the Canyons to support the Canyons Media Work Education Experience, a hands-on program that allows students to create professional-quality media productions while earning non-tuition credit. The program's first project is The Valley, a seven-episode original series that will premiere on SCVTV later this year.

Board Announces Leadership Changes

Sept. 11, 2025 – The Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees announced leadership changes following a closed-session meeting Wednesday, Sept. 10. The board voted to place Interim Superintendent/President David C. Andrus, J.D., on administrative leave, effective immediately. To ensure continuity of college operations, the trustees also announced that Dr. Jasmine Ruys (pictured), assistant superintendent/vice president of student services, will step in immediately to serve as acting superintendent/president in the near term.

Employee Training Institute

$850K Boost for Business Training

Sept. 9, 2025 – The Employee Training Institute has received $850,000 from the California Employment Training Panel (ETP) to provide training for local companies seeking an up-skilled workforce. The two-year reimbursement contract will allow the college to offset training costs charged to employers who meet eligibility requirements. It's the 18th contract of its kind awarded to the college, bringing total ETP funding to more than $9 million for Santa Clarita Valley employers.

Short-Term Class Registration Open

Short-Term Class Registration Open

Sept. 8, 2025 – Students who missed the start of the fall semester still have time to enroll at College of the Canyons. More than 455 late-start classes are available. These accelerated five-, eight-, and 12-week courses have start dates through November, allowing students to catch up, add an extra class, or get ahead in their academic goals. Classes are offered at both the Valencia and Canyon Country campuses, as well as online.

Top 25 Community Colleges for Return on Investment

College Ranked 14th Statewide for ROI

August 26, 2025 – College of the Canyons ranks 14th statewide in a Return on Investment (ROI) analysis of 327 California community colleges and certificate-granting institutions. Among 25 L.A. County community colleges, the college is No. 1 in the Northern L.A. region, with students recouping out-of-pocket costs in just three to four months and earning a median salary of $49,022 within 10 years, according to the College Futures Foundation and HEA Group.

College to Host Statewide Security Center

Aug. 6, 2025 – College of the Canyons has been selected by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office to host the newly relaunched Security Center to provide resources and guidance to community colleges on information security. James Temple, assistant superintendent/vice president of information technology, will serve as executive project director, and Hsiawen Hull, executive director of infrastructure and information security, will serve as chief information security officer. The college will hold security workshops and conduct training throughout the state, and operate a cybersecurity internship program for students.

Technology Center Moves Forward

July 18, 2025 – By approving preliminary project plans, along with an architectural services contract, the Santa Clarita Community College District took the next steps to move forward with developing its Advanced Technology Center. “We have achieved a critical milestone in the process of creating an Advanced Technology Center at the college’s Valencia campus,” Interim Superintendent/President David C. Andrus, J.D., said. The Board of Trustees approved a contract July 16 to hire Kruger Bensen Ziemer Architects to develop the 75,000-square-foot facility.

July 14, 2025 – The Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center Spotlight Series will feature a diverse lineup of performers spanning genres of swing, pop music, and magic. Audit of Bond Spending Affirmed

July 3, 2025 – The Santa Clarita Community College District's Independent Citizens Bond Oversight Committee voted to accept the results of an independent audit confirming the district properly accounted for all bond expenditures in the 2023-24 fiscal year. Eide Bailly LLP conducted financial and performance audits and issued an unmodified opinion – the best rating possible – noting no adjustments, audit findings, questioned costs, or instances of noncompliance.

Physics Club Launches Experiment

Into the Stratosphere

The College of the Canyons chapter of the Society of Physics Students successfully launched a high-altitude balloon carrying a scientific device that members designed and built. The payload included a bio-aerosol sampler to collect microorganisms in the stratosphere, where life is rarely studied. The work is part of a scientific thesis by instructor and chapter advisor Kimberly Berthet.

Student Experiment Soars

An experiment designed by College of the Canyons students soared into the upper stratosphere aboard NASA's High Altitude Student Platform scientific research balloon on Thursday, Sept. 4. The device, designed to capture atomic spectra of the sun's corona, was built by members of the college's Aerospace and Science Team. The balloon was launched from Fort Sumner, N.M.

Culinary arts students prepared lunch for fellow students during the annual "Fuel Up" event on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The goal of the College of the Canyons Institute for Culinary Education event was to provide healthy and delicious meals to hungry students and help them thrive.

Sixty College of the Canyons nursing students received their graduation pins during a ceremony at the Performing Arts Center on Monday, June 2. Among them, 45 completed the traditional two-year Registered Nursing program, and 15 completed the LVN-to-RN accelerated track.
