First-Year Promise Accepting Applications

The College of the Canyons First-Year Promise (FYP) program, which waives tuition and fees for new full-time college students during their first year of study, is now accepting applications for the 2019-20 year. Students who maintain eligibility throughout their first year will be eligible to have their second-year tuition and fees waived through Second-Year Promise.

“Being able to attend college tuition-free for two years can make all the difference to the success of first-time students,” said Jasmine Ruys, associate vice president of enrollment services at the college. “We are very excited to see how these programs will continue opening doors for students.” To be eligible, a student must be a first-time college student and complete all the required application steps.

Eligible students will enroll full-time at College of the Canyons and complete a one-year sequence of courses with priority registration. Students must begin the program by attending a half-day counseling workshop between June 17 and July 8 where they will complete career assessments and receive academic guidance. Students will also attend Welcome Day on Aug. 9 to learn skills needed to be a successful college student.

First-Year Promise courses will be offered with the benefits of free Zero Textbook Cost materials, peer mentors, and other learning community elements. To ensure students remain on track, ongoing counseling and student support will also be offered.

Additionally, each student will receive a $100 voucher per semester that can be applied toward other textbooks, supplies and instructional materials. Other benefits include a parking pass or city bus pass, and free computer lab printing services.

The college anticipates that 600 students will be accepted into the 2019-20 cohort. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible, as all requirements must be complete by April 30.

Notification of acceptance into the program will be sent mid-May.
