Theatre Program Presents ‘Bright Star' Musical

The Theatre Department will present its production of “Bright Star: A New Musical” at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center from April 26 through May 5.

Written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, the Tony Award-nominated musical of love and redemption is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in the mid-1940s with flashbacks to the 1920s. The ballad-filled story follows Billy, a young writer just home from war trying to sell a story to a powerful editor, Alice, who finds herself confronting the mysteries and secrets of her past.

The musical was inspired by Martin and Brickell’s Grammy Award-winning collaboration on the 2013 bluegrass album “Love Has Come for You.” “Bright Star” was nominated for multiple awards and won “Outstanding New Broadway Musical” (Drama Desk 2016), as well as “Outstanding New Broadway Musical” and “Outstanding New Score” (Outer Circle Critics Award 2016).

Directed by Matthew McCray and with music direction by Dan Redfeld, the production of this powerful musical is not to be missed.

The cast is comprised solely of College of the Canyons students. Scenery and lighting for the production are also facilitated by theatre students.
