College to Participate in PLACE Initiative

College of the Canyons is the only community college selected to participate in the Bringing Theory to Practice’s (BTtoP) Partnerships for Listening and Action by Communities and Educators (PLACE) initiative, a collaborative network of academic-community partnerships focused on civic-engagement and public-humanities work.

“It is a tremendous honor to have been the only community college chosen to participate in this this exciting initiative,” said Patty Robinson, faculty director of community engagement initiatives at the college. “We look forward to working together with the other 10 educational institutions selected in developing community-based action plans and learn from one another.”

PLACE’s goal is to develop action plans grounded in community voice that are enabled by regular collaboration and the use of cultural practices like oral history or photo-voice.

Other colleges and universities selected to participate in the PLACE initiative include Rutgers University-Newark, the University of Baltimore, Maryland County, Elon University, Greensboro College, Guilford College, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University, the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, Pitzer College, the University of LaVerne, and the University of Southern California.

The entire initiative is supported by a two-year, $800,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).
