Rectum
Attached to the posterior end of the large intestine is the rectum, which is the last straight part of the digestive system. The rectum is located in the dorsal region of the abdominal cavity under the intestines. The rectum is surrounded by large bands of muscles which help to move digestive wastes (feces) out of the body. The anus is the exterior opening of the digestive system and is surrounded by a muscular sphincter.
