College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Understanding CLEP Credit at College of the Canyons
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows students to demonstrate college-level knowledge in a subject through a standardized examination. Students who earn a qualifying score may receive college credit for a corresponding course without completing the course in a traditional classroom setting.
At College of the Canyons, CLEP is one of the standardized examination options available through Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).
How CLEP Works
CLEP exams are developed and administered by the College Board and cover a variety of introductory college-level subjects, including business, history and social sciences, science and mathematics, literature, and world languages.
Students can prepare for and take CLEP exams without first completing the corresponding college course. If you earn the required score on an exam that College of the Canyons accepts for credit, you may be awarded credit for the corresponding COC course.
CLEP Exams at COC
College of the Canyons accepts certain CLEP exams for college credit. The exam, minimum score, course equivalency, and amount of credit awarded vary by subject.
Important: Not every CLEP exam results in COC credit. Review the current COC CLEP Chart below before registering for an exam.
Before You Take a CLEP Exam
Before registering for a CLEP Exam, consider the following:
- Check Your Educational Plan - Make sure the CLEP credit will apply toward your degree, certificate, or educational goal.
- Review COC Requirements - Check the current CLEP Chart for the accepted exams, minimum scores, course equivalencies, and amount of credit awarded.
- Consider Your Transfer Plans - CLEP credit awarded by College of the Canyons may not be accepted in the same way by another college or university. If you plan to transfer, check with your intended institution to determine how CLEP credit will be applied.
- Meet with a Counselor - A counselor can help you determine whether CLEP is appropriate for your educational plan and how the credit may apply toward your degree or certificate.
