João Carlos Junqueira

Adjunct Instructor of Spanish, Brazil


Born and raised in Porto Alegre, within the gaucho culture in Brazil, Dr. Joo Junqueira was educated in both Brazil and the United States. He did his undergraduate and masters work in Jazz Studies at Ohio State University, and California Institute of the Arts. He earned a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at University of Colorado, Boulder. He has lectured at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and at various North-American universities, including University of Colorado, Metropolitan State College of Denver, University of New Mexico, and Northern Arizona University, Los Angeles City College, and College of the Canyons. He has extensively performed Brazilian music and recorded CDs of his own compositions as well as of other artists. Dr. Junqueira is currently  teaching Spanish at College of the Canyons. He teaches Music, Intercultural Communication and Spanish at National University. He believes that one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of teaching language with joy, commitment, and dedication is to be instrumental in creating educational opportunities that promote partnerships between the college and the community.  He directed, produced and performed, entirely in Spanish and Portuguese, Journey Through Latin America, a very successful educational fundraising concert for the City of Santa Clarita, at Performing Arts Center, College of the Canyons.
