A native of Los Angeles. Mr. El earned a B.A. in Anthropology at UC Berkeley and then an M.A. in French Studies at The University of Wisconsin, Madison. He spent an academic year in Ardèche, France teaching English at a public school as an "Assistant de langue" through the TAPIF program.
