Fieldwork
Fieldwork for the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program
Fieldwork is a critical component of the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program, providing students with essential hands-on learning experiences. It is designed to help students develop and demonstrate the clinical competencies required for optimal patient care. Successful completion of both Level I and Level II Fieldwork is necessary to meet Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) requirements and to qualify for the national certification examination.
Level I Fieldwork
Level I Fieldwork is integrated into academic coursework, offering students opportunities to observe and actively participate in clinical settings. These experiences enable students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application. Specific assignments related to academic coursework are provided to support students’ learning and skill development. This early exposure helps students build foundational skills and an understanding of the occupational therapy process.
Level II Fieldwork
Level II Fieldwork occurs after students complete all academic coursework and is typically completed during the final semester of the OTA Program. It involves two full-time, eight-week assignments at designated fieldwork sites. The College’s OTA department selects these sites, all of which have current training agreements with the College to ensure quality and compliance with ACOTE standards. Students must complete Level II Fieldwork within 12 months of finishing their academic coursework to remain eligible for the certification exam.
Requirement’s for Fieldwork Participation
Before beginning Fieldwork assignments, students must meet the following requirements:
- CPR Certification: Possess a current CPR certification with Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association.
- Health Insurance: Maintain a current personal health insurance policy.
- Malpractice Insurance: Have an active professional liability (malpractice) insurance policy.
Fieldwork experiences are essential to prepare students for the professional roles and responsibilities they will assume as Occupational Therapy Assistants. Through guided clinical practice, students develop the skills, confidence, and competence required to provide high-quality care and succeed in their future careers.
