Summer Technology Institute

The Office of Professional Development is pleased to bring you the Summer Technology Institute 2019.  These technology specific workshops are being offered during the summer to give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge, acquire new skills related to technological advancement, and leave you feeling better prepared when the busy Fall semester begins.

These workshops are open to all full-time and adjunct faculty, administrators, classified & confidential staff, college assistants & short-term employees.

    Strategic Goal: Technological Advancement

    This workshop will provide you with an introduction to the essential elements of Adobe Acrobat Pro. You will learn quick methods for rearranging, combining, and extracting PDF documents, how to add comments, highlight text, and use the markup and stamp tools. You will also learn how to work with bookmarks, and export information from existing PDFs into other formats.

    An image editing software developed and manufactured by Adobe Systems Inc. Photoshop is considered one of the leaders in photo editing software. The software allows users to manipulate, crop, resize, and correct color on digital photos.

    This 3-hour workshop is designed for those who desire to gain the necessary skills to create, edit, format, and print basic Microsoft Excel worksheets. Upon successful completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to create a basic worksheet using Excel 2013, perform calculations in an Excel worksheet, modify and format an Excel worksheet, manage an Excel workbook, and print the contents of an Excel workbook.

    This workshop will look at the current mobile and portal solution for College of the Canyons.  Canyons M is the new project for MIS and we will display its class schedule, mapping, and grades capabilities.  We will also talk about the future use of the product as it will be rolling out to staff and faculty in the Fall of 2019.

    Strategic Goal: Technological Advancement

    At this session, participants will learn how to manage their department's budget in Datatel, and stay on track throughout the year. You will be shown different functions and reports in Datatel that you can use to track expenses, monitor remaining budget and look up expense history. This workshop will also provide you the opportunity to ask questions on best practices, tips for monitoring your budget and let you know when and how you should submit a budget transfer. This course is designed to help you monitor your budget and make your program more successful!

    This workshop is a must for all individuals who enter purchase requisitions in Datatel. Whether you have attended a class in the past or have been entering purchase requisitions for years, we encourage ALL initiators to attend this updated workshop. The workshop is designed to teach and refresh initiators to enter and track purchase requisitions in Datatel Web UI 4.5 from beginning to end. This workshop will also provide the initiator with helpful tips on how you can help provide a smooth transition from requisition to purchase order in a timely manner. In addition, there will be a brief tutorial on simple financial inquiries and reports. Helpful handouts will be provided.

    This course is an introduction for current Grant Project Managers & their Grant Assistants on how to manage their grant funds in a fiscally responsible and regulatory compliant manner. Topics will include running and reviewing Datatel Grant reports, monitoring budgets, staying within regulations, and reporting outcomes.

    Have you ever wondered, what it is IT does all day? Maybe you’ve heard about how important we are, but is it really true? For the first time ever, we pull back the curtain to give you a glimpse at the wonderful world of technology that is going on behind the scenes to support the educational and administrative programs throughout the campus. From examining new classroom technologies to seeing how we connect to the internet, this walking tour is intended to be an insightful look at how we keep the college moving forward and what the future looks like for Technology at College of the Canyons.

This workshop is intended to introduce topics and tactics to combat phishing, malware and ransomware all while helping to secure both your personal and professional information. Whether you use a computer for work or home, this workshop is for you. Learn what technologies Information Technology is employing to combat data thieves and how you can help keep the District's information secure.

    Strategic Goal: Technological Advancement

    The course should appeal to anyone interested in utilizing an online learning management system, such as Canvas, in order to web-enhance an on-ground class, teach a hybrid online class, or teach a 100% online class. The 100% online course will run from June 3rd through July 6th and will be taught by Tammy Mahan (Psychology Professor). Pre-Requisite: Participants must have completed Canvas Communication / Assessment & Organization/Content workshops (4 hours), or the Canvas Self-Paced Online training (4 hours) PRIOR to May 27, 2019 in order to participate in this course. Introduction to Online Instruction will explore the application of learning theories for online learners; differences between face-to-face and online learning; resources for online teaching and learning; course management systems and online learning tools; and best practices for online learning. The class is designed so that participants will experience the components of an online course from both student and instructor perspectives. This five-week, 100% online class will be taught via COC's Learning Management System, Canvas. This course fulfills one of the required components of the College of the Canyons Online Instructor Certificate. Full-time faculty can accrue FLEX credit up to the number of hours the class meets (2 units = 36 hours, e.g.) OR apply 2 units toward salary advancement (see COCFA contract). Adjunct faculty can receive FLEX credit as well, though not to exceed the limit per semester as outlined in the adjunct faculty contract. In this workshop, we will introduce different web based solutions to engage with students in the classrooms, utilizing the same devices they are probably using to ignore your well thought out PowerPoint presentation! From simple quizzing, to gathering metrics we will work together to understand how to use these products and how they can improve classroom interactions.

Those in attendance can be the first to get Office 2019 installed on their machines.

    Find out how to ensure that your departmental purchasing, usage, and design of information technology is compliant under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Learn how to make your web pages, electronic content, and software compliant with this state and federal law, known as Section 508. Learn what the law requires, how accessibility guidelines affect your department, and how to make sure your use of information technology is compliant.

    Note: This workshop fulfills one of the three requirements for the COC Online Instructor Certificate.

    The Vision Resource Center is a new portal dedicated to providing the exceptional support needed to meet the goals and commitments of the Vision for Success through the Guided Pathways framework.

    Participate in online learning and join communities of practice around the concepts and skills necessary to ensure our students and our colleges achieve their full potential.

    1. Log into the Vision Resource Center website at https://visionresourcecenter.cccco.edu/.
    2. Set up a username and password and then log in.
    3. Hover over Learning on the navigation bar, choose Learner Home.
    4. Click on the Search for Learning bar and hit enter.
    5. Over to the left in the Provider drop down menu, you can choose Lynda or one of the other providers.  You can choose subjects from the drop down as well OR you can search from there by title, etc.
