Canvas Updates
Access Restored
May 8, 2026
Access to Canvas has been restored, and you may resume using the platform. While we believe the threats posed by the security breach have been eliminated, we ask you to be cautious. Thank you for your flexibility and patience as we worked to restore access while safeguarding the college's information systems and protecting student and employee data.
Remain Vigilant
Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, shared that there is no evidence that users’ passwords, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, or financial information were compromised. Hackers did access certain user data, including student names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages within the platform. With that in mind:
- Be wary of any new Canvas messages or emails soliciting money to access any element of Canvas or complete Canvas activities.
- Avoid accessing any links or attachments in messages from any user you are not familiar with.
- Contact Computer Support Services at helpdesk@canyons.edu or (661) 362-3953 if you encounter suspicious messages or account behavior.
Next Steps
- Students with specific questions about classes or assignments should contact their instructors for guidance on how to proceed.
- Faculty can find more resources from Online Education.
Expanded Support
The Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) will offer extended Canvas support for students through the weekend:
- Friday, May 8 | until 9 p.m.
- Saturday, May 9 | 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Sunday, May 10 | 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Security Breach
May 7, 2026
Access to Canvas, the learning management system used by College of the Canyons, has been suspended until further notice following a security breach of the platform. Instructure, the company behind Canvas, reports that the platform's vulnerability has been remediated and that access is in the process of being restored.
Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution to ensure student and employee data are protected, College of the Canyons has suspended access to the system until all security measures and safeguards are implemented and Instructure provides documented assurances that the platform is safe. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Background
Canvas suffered a security breach in which a criminal-threat actor gained unauthorized access. Instructure detected the intrusion on April 29, immediately began containment, and confirmed the incident publicly over the following days. A threat actor group subsequently claimed responsibility and attempted to extort the company using a "pay or leak" approach. Based on the investigation to date, data that may have been exposed includes names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages within the Canvas platform. There is no evidence that passwords, Social Security numbers, financial information, or dates of birth were involved.
