Gallery 206 Presents Angela Divina’s ‘Salsa!’

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery presents “Angela Divina: Salsa!” from Sept. 16 to Oct. 24 in Gallery 206. The solo exhibition of Divina’s most recent paintings and collages celebrates our relationship to food through the marriage of domestic science and studio painting.

“We are so fortunate to Angela Divina’s work on our campus,” Art Gallery Director Pamela Bailey Lewis said. “Our newest art space, Gallery 206, features contemporary art projects by emerging to mid-career artists as well as fantastic artwork created by our students. Divina is a recent graduate of our neighbor, CalArts, and is on the ‘emerging’ side professionally. Yet her project ‘Salsa!’ is not only vibrant and exciting but so accomplished – I know our community will really enjoy experiencing it.”

A free public lecture by the artist will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, followed by a reception for the artist from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

A transgender Mexican-American artist based in Bakersfield, Divina is deeply rooted in her Mexican heritage and culture and inspired by the traditional colors and flavors of Durango. Divina is currently working on a cookbook and exploring the radical joy through art, cooking, and eating.

Located on the second floor of the Library, Gallery 206 is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.

All gallery exhibitions and related events are free and open to the public.
