Spring Star Party Set for April 24

College of the Canyons will host its Spring 2026 Star Party on Thursday, April 24, featuring a keynote presentation by Teresa Ciardi, a physical science and astronomy instructor at the college.

Ciardi will present “The Life of a Star: From Birth to End,” an engaging exploration of how stars form, evolve, and ultimately meet their end.

“Some stars fade quietly, while others conclude their lives in dramatic explosions,” said Ciardi. “We’ll look at stars like our Sun, objects that never quite become stars, and massive stars that are 10 to 20 times larger than the Sun.”

A dedicated science educator and mentor, Ciardi has played a leading role in expanding STEM opportunities at COC. As advisor to the college’s Aerospace & Sciences Team (AST), Ciardi has guided students in NASA-affiliated research projects for more than a decade, helping secure funding, facilitate hands-on experimentation, and connect students with internships and careers in STEM fields.

In recognition of her work, Ciardi was selected in 2022 to serve as Community Colleges Work Group Lead for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate Bridge Program, supporting expanded access and engagement between NASA and community college students nationwide.

In addition to the keynote, attendees will have the opportunity to observe the night sky through telescopes with guidance from members of the Local Group Astronomy Club of Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley Astronomy Club. The event will also feature science updates from COC faculty and students, along with interactive activity tables, live demonstrations, and an indoor portable planetarium.

“The Star Party offers a memorable opportunity for students, families, and the broader community to come together and experience the excitement of discovery,” said Dr. Paul Wickline, associate vice president at the Canyon Country campus. “We’re proud to host events that inspire curiosity and bring people of all ages closer to the wonders of science.”

Sponsored by Logix and part of the college’s Science Talks series, the Star Party will take place from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the lower plaza adjacent to the Takeda Science Center on the Canyon Country campus. A food truck will be available on-site with meals for purchase.

This free event is open to the public.
