FAQs

1.   I already previously took Polisc/Ethnst 290 at COC…does that mean it won’t count towards CSU GE Area F/IGETC Area 7?

  • For those of you working towards CSU GE pattern completion, since Polisc/Ethnst 290 WAS approved from Fall 2021 – Summer 2024, as long as you took the course during that timeframe, it will count towards CSU GE Area F.
  • For those of your working towards IGETC pattern completion, since Polisc/Ethnst 290 WAS approved from Fall 2023 – Summer 2024, as long as you took the course during that timeframe, it will count towards IGETC Area 7.

2.
I’ve been continuously attending COC without taking more than a one academic year break since PRIOR to Fall 2021 OR Fall 2023. Does that mean I have catalog rights to the OLDER versions of CSU GE and/or IGETC WITHOUT these new Ethnic Studies requirements?

Yes, it is possible that depending on your catalog rights and how long you have been attending COC continuously without breaking for one full academic year, you may be able to be fully CSU GE or IGETC certified WITHOUT CSU GE Area F or IGETC Area 7. Determining catalog rights can be a tricky process and confusing for some students, so it is best to meet with a COC Counselor to assist you in determining your catalog rights at COC as it pertains to your CSU GE/IGETC pattern completion.

  • If you have been consistently attending COC PRIOR to Fall 2021 WITHOUT breaking for one full academic year, you MAY be eligible for CSU GE pattern completion and certification WITHOUT CSU GE Area F.
  • If you have been consistently attending COC PRIOR to Fall 2023 WITHOUT breaking for one full academic year, you MAY be eligible for IGETC pattern completion and certification WITHOUT IGETC Area 7.

3.
I previously took Ethnst 101 Introduction to Ethnic Studies at COC, does this count towards CSU GE Area F or IGETC Area 7?

If you took this course PRIOR to Fall 2024, it will not be counted towards CSU GE Area F and/or IGETC Area 7. The course was NOT approved for these GE areas prior to the Fall 2024 term. If you take Ethnst 101 Fall 2024 or later, it is approved to count towards CSU GE Area F and/or IGETC Area 7.

4.   When will COC have an approved CSU GE Area F and/or IGETC Area 7?

Effective Fall 2024, Ethnst 101 Intro to Ethnic Studies (3 units) has been approved for CSU GE Area F AND IGETC Area 7. Our new Ethnst 102 Intro to Chicana/o/x Studies (3 units) is approved to be able to count within the CSU GE Area F ONLY.

We are still awaiting news from the CSUs and UCs about whether additional newly written and proposed Ethnic Studies classes will be approved to meet the CSU GE Area F and/or IGETC Area 7 Ethnic Studies requirement, as of Fall 2024 onward.  Please check in with the College of the Canyons Counseling Office for additional updates as this situation unfolds.

5.   I need to take an approved CSU GE Area F and/or IGETC Area 7 course and COC is not offering one, or all the available courses are full. What options do I have?

You have many options to choose from and meeting with a COC Counselor can assist you in finding the best option for you. A great option to consider is using the California Virtual Campus (CVC) website (https://cvc.edu/), which was created to provide students easy access and registration to online courses at ANY California Community College. On the CVC website, you can filter to search for courses that are approved to meet CSU GE Area F and/or IGETC Area 7.  View CVC course registration instructions.
