CPL Process for Faculty
If a student asks whether their prior experience qualifies for CPL:- If you determine the student is eligible - Begin the CPL Assessment Form (coming soon) and follow the provided instructions.
- If you are unsure about eligibility - Direct the student to complete the CPL Interest Form.
- The CPL Interest Form is initiated by the student and routed to the CPL Coordinator to begin the review process.
Faculty Role and Authority
District faculty who teach the course for which an individual seeks CPL, in conjunction with the corresponding department chair, have sole discretion to determine:
- Whether to consider CPL requests for the course
- Whether to award CPL to an individual student
- The type(s) of assessment(s) used
- The content of the assessment(s)
Methods of Assessment
The following methods may be used to award CPL:
- AP, IB, CLEP
- Joint Services Transcripts
- Portfolios
- Industry-recognized documentation
- Other standardized exams
- Approved noncredit-to-credit course equivalencies
- Credit by examination or faculty-developed assessment
- External assessments from other institutions (as approved by faculty).
Department Responsibilities
On an annual basis, the Office of Instruction will ask that department chairs transmit a list of courses for which a department will consider awarding CPL through an assessment(s) other than AP, CLEP, or IB.
To promote consistent, transparent, and equitable evaluation of an assessment submitted for CPL, each department must create and maintain in its files a rubric, evaluation instrument, or predefined standard, as appropriate for a given assessment, for each CPL-eligible course. The lack of such an instrument, however, shall not preclude an award of CPL in a particular case if equitable and appropriate.
