Pre-Requisites

  1. Show proof of graduation from an accredited high school or the equivalent (GED) or any conferred associates degree or higher. 
  2. Have completed the following courses with a grade of C or better and have an average of 2.5 GPA before applying to the Program:
    a. Medical Terminology:
        • HLHSCI 249 (Medical Terminology)
    b. Human Anatomy and Physiology (5 year recency): 
        • Either BIOSCI 201 (Anatomy lecture/lab 4-unit class) and BIOSCI 202 (Physiology lecture/lab 4-unit class) OR BIOSCI 204 (Anatomy and Physiology I lecture/lab 4-unit class) and BIOSCI 205 (Anatomy and Physiology II lecture/lab 4-unit class)
    c. Communications: 
        • COMS 105 - Fundamentals of Public Speaking (Starting Fall 2025 this course will be referred to as COMM-C1000)
    d. Mathematics:
        • Any transfer level Math (such as College Algebra, Statistics, etc.) may be accepted for this requirement. 
        • MATH 103 - College Algebra is recommended by the program.
    e. General Physics:
        
    • Any transfer level General Physics may be accepted for this requirement.
        • PHYS 101 (Introduction to Physics) is recommended by the program.

  • The courses listed above are the recommended prerequisite courses for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at College of the Canyons.
  • Anatomy and Physiology lecture/lab courses are subject to a five-year recency requirement.
  • Applicants who have not met all prerequisite requirements are not eligible for admission to the DMS Program.
  • Completing all prerequisite courses at the time of application may result in a higher ranking during the review process. Applicants with prerequisites in progress must submit proof of current enrollment, and admission status will remain pending until all prerequisites have been successfully completed.
  • Applicants who have not finished all prerequisites may wish to delay applying until all required coursework is complete to be more competitive. If completing prerequisites at another institution, applicants must verify with Counseling before applying that the courses will transfer to College of the Canyons and satisfy program requirements.
  • Completion of prerequisite coursework does not guarantee admission. Admission is contingent upon space availability, completion of fieldwork clearance requirements, and successful background checks.

Pass a medical examination completed on the School of Health Professions form and be able to meet the following:

A. The Technical Standards for the DMS Program
B. Show proof of immunity (not just vaccinations) for the following diseases:
C. MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)
D. Varicella
E. T-dap (within the past 10 years)
F. Hepatitis B*
G. Flu (Yearly/Seasonal) *
H. COVID-19 **
I. 2 Step TB Test
J. PPD Skin Test, or,
K. QuantiFERON Gold Blood Test, or,
L. Chest x-ray within the past 3 years

*Note: Some clinical sites require these immunizations and/or proof of immunity in order for students to be placed for clinical experiences. Religious and other exemptions for applicants are handled on a case-by-case basis.
