Assistant Director, Campus Safety

This position is a high priority for our District for the 2020-2021 year and is contingent upon continue available district, grant and state funding.

The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Assistant Director, Campus Safety in our Student Services division. The ideal candidate will share our college’s commitment to educating the more than 32,000 racially and socioeconomically diverse students we enroll each year.  Currently, our student body is approximately 45.4 percent Latinx/Hispanic, 32.2 percent White, 6.3 percent Asian, 5.5 percent African-American, 4.5 percent Pacific Islander, 2 percent multi-ethnic, and less than 1 percent Native American. The college was designated a Hispanic Serving Institution in 2015, reflecting our focus on enhancing the educational attainment and economic well-being of the community we proudly serve.  As one of 20 community colleges in the state selected for the California Guided Pathways Project, we are focused on enhancing equity and implementing policies and practices that help all students achieve successful academic outcomes.

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the direction of the Director, Campus Safety works to establish safety protocols, policy, and operational standards.  The Assistant Director will assume the responsibilities of the Director of Campus Safety in that person’s absence.  Patrols campus buildings; protects individuals and controls crowds during assemblies or disturbances, as well as supervises full-time and part-time campus safety officers engaged in the same activities.  This position investigates and prepares written reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts, and disturbances of the peace, reviews the reports of subordinates and assumes responsibility for follow-up.  Other duties may include gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses; testifying in court as necessary.  This position may be expected to work a flexible assignment that may include emergency call outs, nights and weekends.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

 

  1. Assumes the responsibilities of the Director of Campus Safety in that person’s absence as well as assumes administrative responsibility for the daily operations at the Canyon Country Campus in the absence of other administrators.
  2. Supervises and evaluates full- and part-time campus safety officers in the performance of their duties.
  3. In conjunction with the Director, Campus Safety ensures that campus safety officers at the assigned work locations are scheduled to provide the best possible service to the campus community.
  4. Works with campus administration regarding special events, policy, emergency procedures, and all other campus safety related activities.
  5. Develops strategy to manage campus traffic at special events, as well as during the academic year.  Issues traffic and parking citations according to established procedures.
  6. Investigates crimes and other incidents occurring on campus. Prepares crime or incident reports as required. Gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and testifies in court as necessary. Reviews the reports of subordinates and responds to recommendations found in those reports.
  7. Investigates and reports presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings; deals with disturbances according to established policy. Ensures that the physical plant is as secure as can be.  Locks and unlocks buildings and offices as needed.
  8. Develops crime prevention activities; enforces laws, traffic regulations and safety regulations on campus; and cites violators.
  9. Provides leadership to the District emergency preparedness efforts, maintains campus emergency supplies, and responds to emergency situations as appropriate.
  10. Conducts Campus Safety related workshops as appropriate.
  11. Patrols college campus on foot, bicycle, cart or vehicle and answers calls to protect college students, faculty and; protects college property and facilities against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.
  12. Responds to alarms and radio calls.
  13. Investigates unusual or potentially dangerous facility conditions; reports detected leaks or malfunctions of electric, plumbing, heating or other equipment; notifies appropriate persons regarding impaired equipment; takes appropriate emergency action.
  14. Supervises the evacuation of classrooms and buildings in emergency situations as necessary.
  15. Assumes a leadership role in an emergency incident command structure.
  16. Receives complaints and requests for assistance from students, visitors or college personnel.
  17. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students and others; provides information and direction to the public as appropriate.
  18. Escorts campus personnel transporting college funds.
  19. Assumes responsibility for the exchange of information with other college personnel and departments and various public safety and law enforcement agencies.
  20. Operates a variety of security tools and equipment including radio equipment and electric cart.
  21. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Experience:

Four (4) years active law enforcement experience required.  Experience in the development and implementation of security, safety and disaster preparedness and response plans desirable.

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of an Associate of Science degree in Administration of Justice or a related field. Coursework or training in supervision is desirable. One year active law enforcement experience in addition to that identified above may be substituted for each one year (30 units) of college.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Guard Registration from Bureau of Security & Investigative Services.
  • Basic Certificate issued by the State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) or the equivalent.
  • First Aid and C.P.R. certifications.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Ability to:

  • Interpret and enforce pertinent laws, rules and regulations with tact, firmness and diplomacy using knowledge of penal code, California Vehicle Code, laws of arrest, search/seizure and Santa Clarita Community College District policies and procedures.
  • Respond appropriately when dealing with representatives of local, state, and federal agencies concerning law enforcement, security and parking control matters.
  • Maintain rapport with college students, staff and the public.
  • Work confidentially with discretion; work independently with little direction.
  • Make decisions in emergencies.
  • Prepare clear and concise written reports of particular situations.
  • Use tact and good judgment in decisions regarding students; assist students and promote good relationships.

SALARY PLACEMENT

This twelve (12) month per year position will be on an individual contract. Salary placement will be Range 11 of the Administrative Salary Schedule. Customarily, the initial step placement for new employees is at Step 1, 2, or 3 ($8,193 / $8,316 / $8,441) of this 20-step salary range. Initial salary placement will be based on education and experience. All administrators are exempt from overtime and compensatory time accumulation.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to weather extremes; subject to evening hours.  Physical demands for this position requires lifting, carrying and stacking objects up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally; frequently exerting 10 - 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push and pull or otherwise move/handle material and objects; extensive standing and walking for extended periods of time, which may include climbing ladders and staircases; stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting/turning and reaching; bending at the waist; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; vision to read printed material, computer monitor, and utilize near and far vision; digit dexterity to operate equipment specific to trade, exposure to Bloodborne pathogens, biohazards, chemicals, and contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals; and travel from site-to-site.
