This position is a high priority for our District for the 2022-2023 year and is contingent upon continued available district, grant and state funding.

The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Student Services Technician I (Medical Assistant) (Student Health & Wellness Center) in the Student Services division on the Canyon Country Campus.

Salary placement will be on Range 22 of Classified Represented Salary Schedule B.

** Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($4,296.00 / $4,534.00/ $4,795.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.

 Probationary period for new Classified employees is six months. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY:

Reports to and under the general supervision of the Director, Student Health and Wellness, the Student Services Technician I (Medical Assistant) provides care and clerical support to medical practitioner in the care of patients, under the clinical direction of a licensed practitioner. The Technician will work as part of the Student Health Services medical office team performing specialized clinical and clerical duties to meet the goal of providing acute primary and reproductive health care for students. The Technician performs more complex duties such as performing phlebotomy and administering injections.

The Technician provides examination room support that relieves medical practitioners of certain routine functions. The position requires demonstrated competence in all aspects of medical office administration, a working knowledge of medical records and billing, and the ability to perform basic patient triage. The Technician will practice within their scope of practice and abide by any and all laws and regulations imposed on their license/certification.

This position will primarily be at the Canyon Country campus but requires some schedule flexibility for the coverage of the Valencia campus, extended hours and special events.

ENTER ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Provides specialized technical and clerical support for medical staff, mental health counselor, nutritionist, other contract employees, consultants and their related committees. This assignment includes administrative detail (i.e. time surveys for MAA and related reports).
  2. Assists in establishing and maintains files on all matters pertaining to students, including processing claims and student accident reports in accordance with District policies and procedures.
  3. Prepares treatment rooms and patients for treatment/examination. Assists the clinical staff with completing exam or procedures as instructed.
  4. Interviews patients for basic information such as but not limited to basic medical history and nature of visit. Takes, reads, and documents in patient chart/EMR: reason for visit (chief complaint), Performs basic screening procedures vision and hearing screening, glucometer, temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, weight, height and laboratory testing etc.
  5. Assists a medical practitioner with examinations by handing instruments, supplies and dispensing medications as ordered and directed.
  6. Renders first-aid and subsequent treatment as directed by a practitioner, such as cleansing, sterilizing, and dressing of minor wounds, re-applying bandages and other dressings. Provides artificial respiration or administers oxygen to distressed patients. Applies documented activity on patient charts as directed.
  7. Administers medication, treatment or injections within their scope of practice and under the direction of the nurse practitioner or physician. Able to perform some office procedures with limited supervision.
  8. Assists medical staff with patient education such as immunizations, family planning.
  9. Performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-waived tests: Pregnancy test, Urine dip etc. Notifies patients of test results after they have been authorized by provider.
  10. Obtains lab samples (within skills range and scope of practice) prepare specimen for lab pick up and complete all paperwork.
  11. Applies knowledge of and ability to follow universal precautions.
  12. Maintains and updates patient medical files with documentation from visits and consultations. Maintains OSHA logs and in-house logs, as well as ensures documentation is properly executed.
  13. Assists with preparation of referrals to outside agencies.
  14. Assists with inventory and ordering of supplies used in connection with patient care.
  15. Maintains a clean, safe, and unobstructed workspace in office and exam rooms. Cleans surfaces, sterilizes instruments, and replaces linens and supplies used for treatment. Stocks rooms and reorders supplies.
  16. Receives walk-in guests and telephone inquiries from staff and students. Assesses the nature of the call and refers to healthcare providers
  17. Under the guidance of the Director, Student Health and Wellness Center or medical practitioner, schedules clinic appointments according to established hours of service. Prepares schedules and informs practitioners of dates and times. Organizes medical files to correspond with appointment schedules.
  18. Maintains current knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
  19. Assists in quality improvement/assurance by reviewing documentation of labs, medications, monitoring controls and temperature of equipment.
  20. Interprets for clinical staff when necessary: Spanish/English/Other.
  21. Assists with training and may provide some work direction for student workers.
  22. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Two (2) years of full-time equivalent administrative/office support experience in community colleges, universities, high schools, community agencies, or similar work in a medical office, clinic or hospital setting.

Education:

Education equivalent to high school diploma and post-secondary education certification as a Medical Assistant required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Medical Assistant Certificate.
  • CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Certificates issued by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other authorized agency.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree or higher.
  • Knowledge of a second language (Spanish speaking preferred).
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite software applications.
  • Current, valid Phlebotomy Certification.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Position requires knowledge of:

  • Injection administration and phlebotomy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Dexterity of hands and fingers to administer first aid, injections and provide phlebotomy services. Position requires sitting and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a typewriter and computer keyboard; reaching, bending, and stooping; frequently exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; vision to read printed material and computer monitor.

Work is performed primarily in an indoor environment where some health and safety considerations exist from physical labor, blood borne pathogens, and medical equipment; exposure to a variety of illnesses; exposure to contaminated waste and equipment; some outside exposure with outreach and projects.
