Professional Development Ongoing Training

There are many opportunities for training and ways to earn FLEX credit throughout the year. The list of activities below describes the variety of options you have.

 

Canvas Training

This Online, self-paced training provides an overview of Canvas, including layout and settings, how to build, organize and edit content, effective online communication tools, and Canvas assessment tools. FLEX credit 4 hours.  To enroll in this course, go to https://intranet.canyons.edu/departments/it/iis/canvas.php/ 

 

Attend Board of Trustees meetings and engage in post-meeting discussion with the Academic Senate president and the COCFA president.

 

Do an Independent FLEX Project
An independent project proposal form must be submitted to the Professional Development office and approved prior to beginning the project, and by the submission deadline of the first Monday after spring break. To receive FLEX credit, a final project must be submitted by June 30. The proposal form is available at

Conduct Faculty Evaluations
Three hours of FLEX credit per evaluation for the evaluator and 2 hours of FLEX credit for the evaluatee.  Please email the name(s) of the faculty you evaluated to heather.stewart@canyons.edu and sarah.dettman@canyons.edu 

 

Attend Conferences Outside of Scheduled Work Hours

Sign up for Individual Computer Training
FLEX credit - 3 hours max per year
Scheduled tutoring sessions in your own work area, on your own computer are available. To schedule an appointment, please send an email to Heather Stewart at heather.stewart@canyons.edu . Please be sure to indicate the program or software in which you would like to receive tutoring.

Sign up for Individual Web Page Training (Sharepoint)
FLEX credit 2 hours max per year
Staff members from Computer Support Services will be available by appointment for training sessions throughout the year. They are available to assist individuals on specific topics related to web page development. When requesting a training session, please indicate your desired topic. To make an appointment, please send an email to Heather Stewart at heather.stewart@canyons.edu .

Engage in Individual SLO (Student Learning Outcomes) Training
FLEX credit - 3 hours max per year
Members of the SLO committee are available to meet with you by appointment in order to meet your individual training needs regarding Student Learning Outcomes and Student Learning Outcomes assessment. To set up an appointment, please contact Mary Powell at mary.powell@canyons.edu or Saburo Matsumoto at saburo.matsumoto@canyons.edu and include the topic you would like to learn more about as well as your availability. Learning outcomes will vary by session. To receive FLEX credit, please report your training time via email to Heather Stewart at heather.stewart@canyons.edu and Sarah Dettman at sarah.dettman@canyons.edu

 

Become a Mentor in the Professional Development Mentor Program
FLEX credit - 8 hours semester/16 hours max per year

The Office of Professional Development has designed a mentor program for those faculty and staff who aspire to a management or leadership position. It is also for those experienced managers who want to take the next step and move into a higher-level administrative position.

The purpose of the Professional Development Mentor Program is to provide opportunities for employees who have a desire to develop and enhance their career development opportunities, to be paired with a mentor who will guide, advise and motivate them to continue to improve their skills and knowledge and grow with the College into a management or leadership position.

The Professional Development Mentor Program is open to all full-time and adjunct faculty, classified and confidential staff and administrators. Applications are accepted prior to the start of the fall semester. Please contact Heather Stewart at heather.stewart@canyons.edu for the application and additional information.

 

Complete one or all of the following three web-based courses delivered from Workplace Answers:

  • Unlawful Harrassment Prevention for Higher Education
  • Preventing Discrimination and Sexual Violence (Title IX)
  • Emergency Preparedness

1 hour FLEX credit per training

The Santa Clarita Community College District takes the well-being of our students and employees very seriously. As a member of our college community, it is everyones responsibility to uphold a safe and hospitable learning and working environment and to prepare for when situations arise that requires action, whether in an emergency situation or witnessing misconduct. For instance, as a faculty member, you are the most likely to witness or receive reports of sexual harassment and sexual violence from our students. It is imperative that all employees receive enhanced training which, at a minimum, includes the requirements for proper reporting of sexual harassment and/or violence and information about the Districts responsibilities for responding to such reports. Further, as a faculty member, you are the most likely to report an emergency situation on campus. To support the safety of everyone on campus during an emergency situation, all employees need comprehensive training on how to evaluate and respond properly to a variety of scenarios (fire, electrical malfunctions, suspicious activity, etc.). The following three (3) trainings are short web-based courses delivered directly from Workplace Answers which are interactive and contain many challenging and interesting real-life work situations: Unlawful Harassment Prevention for Higher Education Preventing Discrimination and Sexual Violence (Title IX) Emergency Preparedness Toregister for a "Workplace Answers" training, please e-mail Rian Medlin at rian.medlin@canyons.edu, or by phone at 661-362-3426. Participate in IRB Training (Institutional Review Board Training)
FLEX credit 6 hours basic/3 hours refresher for IRB board members.
FLEX credit 2 hours basic/1 hour refresher for faculty submitting requests to the IRB.

The Santa Clarita Community College District Institutional Review Board is charged with protecting the rights and welfare of human research subjects for projects in which the District is engaged. Guided by the principles of The Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research, the SCCCD IRB reviews all human research protocols in accordance with federal regulations, State laws, and local and District policies. The SCCCD IRB is comprised of members from various disciplines in the social/behavioral sciences, biological/physical sciences, nursing, institutional research office, and community/lay members (as needed) to assure a comprehensive review process. Through a collaborative partnership, the SCCCD IRB assists investigators in the protection of human subjects.

Attend Non-COC Provider Training
Faculty and staff can earn FLEX credit for attending training provided by entities outside of the Professional Development program.  The proposal form is available at

Collaborate on a Project
FLEX credit is given for faculty who collaborate with another on-campus department on a project or initiative. The proposal form is available at

Engage in Outreach
FLEX credit is given for faculty who engage in outreach activities on behalf of the Santa Clarita Community College District. The proposal form is available at

Propose a Workshop
Faculty and staff are invited to propose a workshop to be presented as part of the Professional Development program offerings. Presentations at Local Adult Living Communities
COC faculty are invited to share their wealth of knowledge with the local community!  Sign up to provide a presentation on a topic of your choice for the residents at the following local Adult Living Communities:

  • Bel Caro - Wednesdays, 4:00pm
  • Friendly Valley - Fridays, 1:00pm

Every employee is encouraged to complete a personal Professional Development plan each year and engage in training that addresses the needs identified in that plan.
