CARES Act Emergency Grants

The recently passed federal CARES Act includes funds for students to help with immediate needs related to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.


  • College of the Canyons has been allocated $6,326,734, and has certified with the U.S. Department of Education that $3,163,367 will go directly to students.
  • Over 9,000 students at College of the Canyons may be eligible to apply for a grant.
  • The CARES Act Emergency Grant program has limited funding. Students will be awarded grants as long as funds remain available.
  • Funds will be disbursed as quickly as possible in order to provide students with the support they need to continue their educational pursuits.

A recent federal court decision now allows students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, who were enrolled in at least one on-ground class on March 13, 2020 at College of the Canyons, to be eligible for a CARES Act Emergency Grant.

Grant Distribution

Grants totaling over $1.8 million have already been given to 2,758 students based on the original guidance from the U.S. Department of Education. 

Remaining emergency funds are limited. Students will be awarded grants if funds remain available. Eligible students will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis through the application process.

Additional grants will be disbursed on July 1, 2020.

Those students who have the greatest financial need will be considered for emergency grant funds first. College of the Canyons anticipates disbursing funds in the coming weeks.
