The new Umoja Community is an inclusive support program focused on enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of Black and African American students. Open to all students, Umoja fosters a sense of belonging through counseling, mentorship, community building, and culturally relevant instruction grounded in the legacy of the African and African American Diasporas.

What to expect in the Umoja Orientation:
We’re excited to welcome you to the new Umoja Community at College of the Canyons! Umoja (meaning unity in Kiswahili) is more than a program—it’s a new cultural learning community dedicated to your success. During our orientation, you will:
- Meet your Umoja family
- Learn about Umoja’s 18 cultural practices
- Review program benefits & requirements
- Learn more about upcoming events and activities.
- Get information on how to connect with our Umoja coordinators.

Meeting with an Umoja counselor is an important part of your Umoja experience. During your appointment, you'll receive personalized support with your educational goals, academic planning, transfer and career exploration, and connections to campus resources. These meetings help ensure you stay on track and make the most of the opportunities available through Umoja.

Who Can Be an Umoja Student?
To be considered an Umoja student at College of the Canyons, you must have an Umoja application on file and agree to the following:
- Attend mandatory orientation or Umoja Welcome Event each academic year.
- Enroll in at least one Umoja-dedicated course (Some circumstances may warrant exceptions).
- Meet with a designated Umoja counselor for academic planning and support.
- Participate in at least two Umoja-sponsored workshops, excursions, or activities per semester; such as a campus event, cultural enrichment activity, or field trip.
- Attend class regularly, stay engaged, and seek support when needed.
- Remain actively enrolled at College of the Canyons.
