Alicia Piller

Artist Lecture by Alicia Piller
Tuesday, November 16 at 2:30pm

Los Angeles based artist, Alicia Piller envisions historical traumas, both political and environmental, through the lens of a microscope. Her sculptures and installations conceive of past atrocities, suffering, and accomplishments as biological forms–broken down to a cellular level. A variety of materials including vinyl, latex balloons, and photographs, are employed to examine the energy around wounds societies have inflicted upon themselves and others, but also give optimistic glimpses of a possible future with bright colors that show signs of life and proliferating forms that show signs of growth. Her subject matter is often informed by her studies in anthropology and her sculptural process by her time in fashion and craft making. Alicia Piller received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.

Diane Williams

Artist Lecture by Diane Williams
Tuesday, November 2nd at 2:30pm
Register for artist talk click HERE

Diane Williams is a Pilipinx interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and organizer based in Los Angeles. In her exhibition, The Mess of Empire on view in Gallery 206 on the Valencia campus, she examines colonial legacies and the afterlives of empire. Williams contextualizes this idea by creating works that embody shared and non-linear collective stories of the underrepresented other, illegible under the political economy of life. She weaves cultural detritus as metaphors for how the marginalized are often viewed as disposable while monumentalizing these embodied objects.

Her work has been featured in Artforum, Hyperallergenic, Los Angeles Magazine, LA Weekly, Artillery, and Art & Cake. She has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions throughout Southern California and internationally. She received her BFA from CSU Long Beach, and her MFA from the University of Southern California.
