Introduction
Good to have you in my class! I am Prof. Nicolas Briseno. You can call me Nick. (it is just easier that way). I am excited to have you in my class and glad to see you at out shop again! This class will focus on performance of engines. Now, you might be thinking it will be all about turning and aftermarket equipt. We will touch on that however, it is important to know how all the sensors and such work prior to adding or removing components to a vehicle. We'll learn all about emission systems and performance systems. I look forward to having you in my class!
Course Description
During the first few days there is a lot of paperwork to complete. Don't worry, we will get this done and get into the shop by the 2nd meeting day.
- Lecture
- Describe the operation of various engines.
- Describe the operation of various ignition, fuel and engine computer control feedback systems.
- Explain the different engine management systems and components therein.
- Explain the nature of performance tuning.
- Analyze how ignition systems would relate to hydrocarbons and fuel systems relate to carbon monoxide.
- Analyze how combustion temperatures relate to knocks.
- Lab
- Service various engine, cooling, ignition, charging, fuel, intake, exhaust and computer control systems to industry and manufacturer standards
- Demonstrate proficient use of various electronic test equipment including meters, analyzers and diagnostic testers and scanners
- Perform emission test in loaded mode to analyze nitrogen oxides (NOx) produced during combustion.
By the end of this course you should be able to: (Course Objectives)
- Perform measurements on engines and their components to determine repair procedures.
- Identify tools needed for automotive repair.
- Describe and identify engine components.
- Identify and describe automotive engine test equipment.
- Be able to find repair information and resources to find the information for engine repair and diagnosis
- Describe crankshaft design, function, and service.
- Describe cylinder head design, function, and service.
- Describe valve train design, function, and service.
What to Expect in this Course
A laptop or PC or smartphone will be used during this course (laptop or PC preferred). We will be using Canvas for the online portion of this course. Within Canvas we will use a computer assisted learning system called Electude. Vouchers will be distributed during the second week of the course. There will be one research paper due toward the end of the term. There will be discussions about the work to come as well as other discussions about the general knowledge of this course.
Types of Assessments
There will be various quizzes throughout the weeks as well as a final exam.
Textbook Information
There are no textbooks required for this course. Electude vouchers and instructions will be distributed during the later half of the second week into the third week of the course.
