Introduction

I am a practicing artist and dedicated educator with a passion for teaching the fundamentals of visual arts. I believe that drawing from life is an essential skill for anyone pursuing the arts, as it sharpens observation, enhances technical ability, and deepens artistic expression. In this course, students will develop a strong foundation in figure drawing, learning to see and interpret the human form with accuracy and confidence.

This course is designed for both beginners and experienced artists looking to deepen their understanding of the human figure. You’ll develop a strong foundation in proportion and anatomy while also exploring expressive, dynamic approaches to figure drawing.

Course Description

This course is structured to accommodate beginning life-drawing students while also advancing conceptual and technical skills in depicting the human figure. Students will gain a solid understanding of human proportions and the musculoskeletal structure. We will begin with simple armature, exploring its relationship to gesture, balance, and proportion to block out the human form. Next, we will progress to muscular draping, focusing on the anatomical survey of basic underlying forms and their connections. Regular lectures will cover key anatomical components of the human form, and contemporary figurative artworks will be analyzed and discussed.

What to Expect in this Course

The weekly coursework will range from occasional readings and sketchbook assignments to multi-week homework projects. The course does not require the purchase of any reading materials, but a list of required drawing supplies will be provided in the syllabus, which will be accessible on Canvas.

Types of Assessments

The readings will be provided, and all assignments will be drawing-based with no written components.
