Introduction

Photograph of instructor

My name is Suzanne Hawson, and I am excited to be your instructor for this course. I have been a licensed Physical Therapist since 2002, with my primary clinical experience in outpatient orthopedics. In 2005, I became a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and have maintained this certification ever since.

My teaching career began in 2012 as an adjunct faculty member in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Cal State Northridge. After 12 years, I transitioned to teaching in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Casa Loma College. Throughout my years in education, I have continued practicing clinically and currently own an outpatient physical therapy private practice in the Santa Clarita Valley. Additionally, I have experience in various settings, including acute inpatient care, acute rehab, home health, and virtual physical therapy. My career has taken me from being a staff physical therapist to a clinic director and even an entrepreneur in the field.

I am thrilled that your curiosity about physical therapy has brought you to this class. Physical therapy is a deeply rewarding profession that allows us to help people regain mobility, independence, and quality of life. My goal is to introduce you to the fundamental principles of physical therapy, share real-world insights, and inspire you to explore this incredible field further.

I am looking forward to a great semester together!

Course Description

Introduces a comprehensive overview of the field of Physical Therapy, from its historical beginnings to the present day. Content covered includes the roles of Physical Therapists (PTs) and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) in the treatment and management of musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neurological, and integumentary disorders. This course is designed for students interested in applying to PT or PTA professional programs. Field trips are optional.

What to Expect in this Course

The assignments for the semester are grouped into weekly learning Modules (for a short summer or winter semester there will be multiple modules per week.)  Every week students are assigned a new chapter, or chapters, for reading that correlates to the Canvas assignments in the modules.  For each chapter you will be assigned reading, writing and participation assignments. The due dates and point values are available within the Canvas Modules.  These modules are created for sequential learning.  That means, you cannot access the next assignment for that week until you have completed the first, then second etc.  You must complete the current module before the next week’s module will be made available to you.  Upon completing the assignments, you will be able to access your grade by viewing your personal grade book from the left hand menu options. There is a final project due at the end of the semester along with a final exam.

***Remember that for each three-unit Physical Therapist Assistant class you should expect to spend about nine hours per week on the class in a full semester. *** This includes reading, taking exams, etc. This is for a standard 15-week semester. You can adjust the math accordingly for an 8-week condensed version.

Because this class is fully online, attendance is measured by participation in required activities and assignments. Online courses require a high level of self-initiative, and they are well suited to students who possess this quality.

To do well in this class you will need access to a dependable computer as well as reliable access to the internet. The school has lots of computers available for your use/check out from the library, TLC, and ASG computer lab. Your public library likely has computers for use, but the time allowed may be limited.

Types of Assessments

Online quizzes, online discussion boards and written assignments, final examination as well as a written and recorded presentation project.
