Introduction
Hello and welcome! My name is Kristin Yates and I will be your instructor for this course. I was a practicing physical therapist for over 10 years in the areas of acute care, acute rehabilitation, outpatient neurological rehab, and outpatient pediatric rehab. I have been teaching since 2015.
I am excited that you are interested in the physical therapy profession. It is a highly rewarding career to be a positive part of someone’s path toward improved pain, healing, function, and independence. I look forward to learning together!
Course Description
This course introduces a comprehensive overview of the field of Physical Therapy, from its historical beginnings to the present day. Content covered includes the roles of Physical Therapists (PTs) and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) in the treatment and management of musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neurological, and integumentary disorders. This course is designed for students interested in applying to PT or PTA professional programs.
What to Expect in this Course
The assignments for the semester are grouped into weekly learning Modules. Every week students are assigned a new chapter, or chapters, for reading that correlates to the Canvas assignments in the modules. For each chapter, you will be assigned reading, writing, and participation assignments. The due dates and point values are available within the Canvas Modules. These modules are created for sequential learning. That means, you cannot access the next assignment for that week until you have completed the first, then second, etc. You must complete the current module before the next week’s module will be made available to you. Upon completing the assignments, you will be able to access your grade by viewing your personal grade book from the left menu options in Canvas.
For this course, you will need access to a dependable computer as well as reliable access to the internet. You will also need access to a web browser (Chrome is recommended) and a word processing program such as Word or Google Docs. The school has lots of computers available for your use/check out from the library, TLC, and ASG computer lab. Your public library likely has computers for use, but the time allowed may be limited.
