Introduction

Hello! My name is Briauna A. Johnson and I will be your instructor for this course! I am very excited to teach this course as one of my specialties happens to be in gender and sexuality. My teaching style is conversational. I want you engaged with me in the moment while we discuss, brainstorm, and critically think/assess different topics throughout the course. Additionally, I like to have a good time! Whether this means playing a song before class that correlates to our subject manner or designing a project and/or assignments that are applicable to your everyday life--I use media and current events to make the subject manners not only informative but applicable. I yearn to have an environment in my classes where I learn just as much from you as you do from me--basing our lectures on communal storytelling.

Course Description

In this course students will analyze contemporary and historical sex and gender roles in major societal institutions with a specific focus on pop culture and work. Topics covered in the course will include the social construction of gender, feminist epistemology, gender and work, gender and popular culture, sexuality and gender identity, masculinity, gendered violence, and gendered social movements. The course will challenge students to deeply reflect on their own lives and how many of their taken for granted assumptions pertaining to gender could be a result of larger social and cultural factors.
