Introduction

This course will be in a HYBRID format (partially online/partially in-person)  That means that we will meet in person SIX times during the semester and we will be "meeting" asynchronously online during the other 10 weeks of the semester.  During our online weeks, you will be watching lectures, engaging in online lab activities and completing quizzes/exams through Canvas.

Please note: It is recommended that you also enroll in the hybrid ANTHRO 101 lecture section # 60746 that goes along with this course.  The lab will be meeting on the same six Fridays from 9:30 - 10:50 in am in CCC 505.

Week 4: Friday, March 4th 11:30 am - 2:35 pm (Topic: Population Genetics & The Forces of Evolution)

Week 6: Friday, March 18th 11:30 am - 2:35 pm (Topic: The Human Skelton & Forensic Anthropology)

Week 8: Friday, April 1st 11:30 am - 2:35 pm (Topic: Primate Classification)

SPRING BREAK: April 4th - 10th (no work online or in-person)

Week 10: Friday, April 22nd 11:30 am - 2:35 pm (Topic: Primate Diet, Locomotion & Sexual Dimorphism)

Week 12: Friday, May 6th 11:30 am - 2:35 pm (Topic: The Australopithecines & Early Genus Homo)

Week 14: Friday, May 20th 11:30 am - 2:35 pm (Topic: Later Members of Genus Homo)

Course Description

A laboratory course in physical anthropology designed primarily for non-science majors. A half-day field trip is requiredThis course focuses on the evolution of the human species and non-human primates primarily from the biological perspective. Topics include human heredity and population genetics, primate behavior and conservation, the human fossil record, and modern human variation.  Prerequisite or Co-requisite: ANTHRO 101: Introduction to Physical Anthropology (Lecture).

What to Expect in this Course

Guidelines

This course is designed to take about 4 - 5 hours per week (on average). Please plan to:

  • Set aside time each week to view all module materials and submit required work
  • Log in regularly each week to check for announcements, grades, messages, and comments
  • Participate in online discussions and respond thoughtfully to your peers.
  • You must email me PRIOR to the deadline with the required documentation if you are requesting and extension beyond 24 hours of the original due date.

Drop Policy

  • During the first week: Submit the About Me Discussion in order to mark your attendance and secure your spot!
  • Throughout the term: Submit work regularly to show your active attendance. If you do not submit work for 2 modules in a row, you may be dropped for non-participation!

Canvas

We will be using Canvas for this course, so you will need access to a computer and Internet. Canvas is also mobile-friendly and can be used on your phone or tablet through the Canvas Mobile App (Links to an external site.) or a mobile browser!

Other Materials

  • It is recommended that you have a folder (either physical folder or electronic folder) to keep all of your materials for this course organized.
  • Optional: Access to a printer if you prefer to print out your worksheets and hand write your answers.
  • Genius Scan (Links to an external site.) is a helpful application that you can download for free on your smartphone to scan documents.
  • Access to the Remind App. This free application will allow us to text message each other without having to share personal phone numbers.

Types of Assessments

Concept Review Questions (20%):

  • Each week there will be a PowerPoint presentation and a short reading assignment (from your lab manual) to review prior to beginning your lab exercises.  This information will be critical to your success. 
  • The Concept Review Questions are designed to ensure that you have completed the required reading and prepare you to begin engaging in the lab exercises.
  • You will have TWO attempts to complete each concept review question activity.  The answer options will be shuffled after each attempt.  You will be able to view the correct answers after your final attempt.
  • However, keep in mind that in order to take advantage of the second attempt, you will need to submit your first attempt no later than Thursdays by 11:59 pm.  I will need time to review your work, provide corrections in the gradebook to allow you time to correct your work and resubmit if needed.
  • The Concept Review Questions are due no later than the Sundays by 11:59 pm

 

Lab Exercises (40%):

  • Each week there will be several online lab exercises to complete. 
  • These lab exercises are in your lab manual.  I recommend that you write out your answers in your lab manual and then submit your answers in Canvas or in-person for our six in-person labs (see dates of in-person lab meetings above).
  • All lab exercises will be submitted through Canvas by the deadline.
  • You will need your lab manual to complete these exercises.  Only the second edition will match up properly with the lab exercises in Canvas.
  • You will have TWO attempts to complete each lab exercise.  The answer options will be shuffled after each attempt.  You will be able to review the correct answers after your final attempt.

  • The lab exercises for each unit will be due no later than Sundays by 11:59 pm.

 

Unit Lab Exams (40%):

  • There will be four unit lab exams.
  • Each exam will be 50 multiple choice style questions.
  • You will have ONE attempt to complete each unit exam.
  • Please ensure that you are only using GOOGLE CHROME as your internet browser while taking an exam.  Previous students have reported that there are issues with Internet Explorer and Safari while taking an exam in Canvas. 
  • Unit Exams are the only assignment that I cannot take late since I need to be able to post answer keys in a timely manner.  The exam will be open for 72 hours to allow you to take the exam at a time that works in your schedule.

Textbook Information

  • This lab manual will be required in order for you to successfully complete this course.
  • You may rent or purchase a copy from the campus bookstore.
  • You will need a hard copy (either the loose-leaf or spiral bound copy will work fine).  
  • Only the SECOND EDITION will go along with the concept review questions and lab exercises on Canvas.
  • You will need your lab manual no later than Monday, February 7th to avoid falling behind in the course.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few.
