Introduction
Hello! I am Elizabeth Mackey, your instructor for Art 111. I look forward to learning together this semester!

Our class is 100% online but we will have ample opportunity to communicate, discuss course content, and build community through our learning processes.
The course that require approximately seven to ten hours per week of your time. This includes time working in our course shell as well as your independent research and study time. Course requirements will include reading course materials, participating in class discussions, researching and writing about works of art, and completing exams and projects.
Course Description
In this course, we will analyze major works of art, emphasizing leading creative movements of the Western World, from the Italian Renaissance through the contemporary period.
What to Expect in this Course
You'll learn about many things in this class, not only art, but also introductory histories of various regions and time periods, their people and customs. Learning in this class is image oriented, expect to look closely at and think critically about works of art and architecture.
As we move through the semester, you will develop and strengthen your visual analysis skills by interpreting artworks based on how they look, the time and place they were made, who made them, what materials and techniques were used, and how this informs their meaning.
Although our course is 100% online, you will have opportunities to discuss and explore our course content together with myself and your classmates.
Assignments, exams, projects, etc. will be accessed and submitted through Canvas.

Textbook Information
Kleiner, Fred, S. Gardner’s Art Through the Ages: A Global Perspective, volume II. If you find the cost of the latest edition of Gardner too high, you may purchase an earlier edition (no earlier than the 10th edition). Digital e-books and textbook rental are affordable options as well.
Other Relevant Course Information
Please aim to obtain a copy of the textbook prior to the beginning of class. If you have questions about the required textbook, please wait to purchase or rent your copy until after the first day of class so your concerns can be addressed. Assignments are due weekly. Please establish regular work habits to meet deadlines and remain current with course requirements.

Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
