Welcome to General Biology!  My name is Carri Biggle. I have been teaching Biology at COC since 2008.  I absolutely love biology and teaching and I am very much looking forward to working with all of you!! This course is a great introduction to our living world.  We will be exploring the tiniest cells all the way up to large and diverse ecosystems. We will characterize the nature of science and scientific inquiry, and describe and analyze biological concepts on a basic level.  This course is challenging! One of the reasons this course is challenging is because it requires learning new vocabulary and mastering concepts that may initially feel very foreign. However, just like any other skill, Biology can be mastered with time, patience, and dedication. I wish you a successful winter term, please do not hesitate to contact me or engage in the course materials.

Course Description

A non-majors, general education biology course to acquaint students with major biology topics.  The course will explore the structure, function, and development of living systems from cells to ecosystems. 4 units.  UC credit limitation: No credit for BIOSCI100 if taken BIOSCI-106, 107, 201, 202, 204, 205, 215, 216, 221, or 250

What to Expect in this Course

Expect to put the same amount of time and effort into this course as you would put into succeeding in a traditional face-to-face class. There is often a misconception that online/hybrid courses are easier than traditional courses but that is not the case. In fact, in some cases online courses can be even more challenging because you must take additional responsibility for your time management. While online/hybrid classes do afford you additional flexibility with your schedule, they also require you to be more self-directed and independent. If you have questions at any time please do not hesitate to email me directly or attend weekly office hours.

The lecture & lab components of this course will be hybrid.  I highly recommend that you not miss any of the lab meetings during the semester because they will allow you to experience main topics and an overview of the assignments that will be due each week.  It will also give you a chance to ask me any questions you have and interact with your classmates as well.

The main method I will use to communicate with students is through COC email and Canvas notifications and announcements.  You must check notifications regularly and set up alerts on your phone for these messages so that you receive communications from me in a timely manner.

If you are in need of special accommodations, you should register with the office of DSP&S (Disabled Students Program & Services) at COC at the beginning of the semester so that they can work with you to identify what accommodations and resources you may need to complete this course.  They will provide you with an official accommodation letter for the current semester, which you should send me a copy of by the second week of the semester.  That will ensure that your needs are met in a timely manner (see Disabled Students Program & Services section below for more details). 

Types of Assessments

All assignments and tests will be administered through the Canvas learning management system and will not require any special type of proctoring software. Assessments will consist of a variety of exams, quizzes, and discussion boards assignments. Activities you can expect to engage in will include online lectures, lab assignments, and lab simulations.

Recommended Textbook: Campbell, Essential Biology, 8th ed. BioSci 100 Lab Manual: Building Knowledge Through Experiments, 4th ed. Hard copy is only available from the COC bookstore. You can also access a digital copy on our class Canvas site (hardcopy is not required but it is recommended).

All the required course materials can be accessed for free online.  Lab assignments will be available in each Module offered on Canvas

Other Relevant Course Information

All students are required to attend the Zoom meeting on the first day of class so as not to lose their spot in the class to students on the waitlist. 

Attendance is required per college policy, which states,

Any student absent for any reason for more than 10% of the class meetings may be dropped by the instructor prior to 75% of the course. For this course, regular attendance will refer to completing the weekly lecture and lab homework assignments and completing the tests by the due dates listed.  You should communicate with me right away if you anticipate a disruption in your schedule that will impact your ability to complete the assigned coursework by the due date.  If you miss one weeks’ worth of course work without contacting me, you may be dropped from the course for non-attendance.

This transition to an online/hybrid format will require some adjustments to the way this course is normally offered. This change can be especially challenging for students and instructor. However, it is my hope that through the use of various digital resources I can accommodate students with all learning styles. We will be using digital software, videos, pictures, simulations and activities to supplement our learning in lecture.
