Introduction

Professor Smith welcomes you!

Hello! My name is Thomas Smith, and I will be your instructor for the BioSci 201
course. This course is an introduction to the microscopic and gross structure of the human body. Learning Human Anatomy (BioSci 201) will provide you with a great deal of knowledge about the structure and organization of your body. The information in this letter will help you decide whether you would like to take the
course. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you about this fascinating study of Human Anatomy!

Course Description

Vitruvian Man (Leonardo da Vinci) BioSci 201 begins with an introduction to anatomy and anatomical terms. We refresh our basic knowledge on cells and embryology, then study tissues and the skeleton in the lab. Next we     learn the skeletal muscles of the body and continue exploring the remainder of the 11major body systems.

Student Learning Outcome (Lecture): Differentiate and analyze the major structural characteristics of the human body.

Student Learning Outcome (Lab): Perform and evaluate anatomical experiments using representative mammalian specimens and analyze data.

What to Expect in this Course

BioSci 201 is a fast-paced course and every session you will be provided with a lot of information. The authors of the textbook write: “Learning anatomy involves assimilating massive amounts of material.” Yet, the authors have made the subject accessible, and the College of the Canyons Anatomy and Physiology faculty strive to do the same. Make sure that you stay on top of the provided material by spending a few hours per day for your studies in anatomy. As this is a hybrid course, the lecture portions of the course is asynchronous online. The lab portion of the course meets at College of the Canyons Canyon Country Campus. I have posted the syllabus on Canvas, which will provide you with the schedule that we follow for both lecture chapters and lab content. You need to make sure to follow this schedule to stay current with the material and be ready for what we do in the lab..

Lecture portion: Video lectures for each chapter are posted appropriately on the course page. You will require access online to Canvas for viewing. You should review the chapter in your textbook before viewing the lecture. I suggest you read and study the chapter after watching the video, as well as reviewing content the next day or two after to test your recall. You may require doing this more than once or preparing notes, cards, or us an electronic means of review and testing.

Lab portion: Homework assignments for the lab will be posted on the course page. Lab assignments will be explained in the lab. You should plan to study the lab work in a similar manner as the text chapters. Attendance to the first-class meetings is mandatory. In addition, students are expected to attend every lab, as these may not be made up.

Types of Assessments

Lecture quizzes (weekly). Lecture exams (bi-weekly). Lab practicals (bi-weekly), Cumulative lecture final exam.
