Introduction

Welcome to BUS 100, Introduction to Business. My name is Prof. Joan Washington. I look forward to seeing you in the Fall 2021 semester at the College of the Canyons (COC). This course in OnlinLive via Zoom and it will be available on COC's Canvas Course Learning Management System at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2021. 

Class starts Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at 11 a.m. You must log into the course canvas and post to the "Roll Call Discussion Board" on the listed deadline otherwise you will be dropped from the course. 

Course Description

Introduces the field of business administration, examining how U.S. and global business policies and practices are affected by the interaction of economic systems, culture, legal, political, and financial institutions, including economic systems, leadership, entrepreneurship, strategic management, organizational structure and communication, marketing, accounting, finance, stock market, operations, information technology, human resources, organized labor, ethics, social responsibility, sustainability, and globalization.

What to Expect in this Course

08/25/2021-12/08/2021 Distance Ed, Internet-Based Wednesday 11:00AM - 12:20PM, OnlineLIVE via Zoom. The weekly links to Zoom will be in the course canvas. There will be class sessions that are prerecorded because of scheduling. You will always be notified no later than one week prior to class session if the following week's lecture is prerecorded. You must have a webcam, microphone, and access to Canvas support via the COC website. Each week you will be graded on class participation, weekly discussion questions, individual and group assignments, weekly quizzes, a final exam and a final research paper.

Types of Assessments

Your learning assessments will be your responses to the online discussion boards, case study assignments, your research paper for the course, quizzes and the final exam.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
