Hi and welcome to Principles of Ecommerce!   I am excited to be your professor for the next 16 weeks!

Here is my bio:

Dr. Sonja Ann Jones draws upon extensive hours of facilitating, training and coaching business leaders and teams in many established companies and colleges.  She has a deep background in curriculum development and training programs.  She focuses on teaching students and professionals to reach the next level of business leadership.   She brings her real-world experiences to the classroom and motivates her students to apply classroom learnings/assignments to use in their real-world careers and entrepreneurial dreams.  

She draws on over 25 years of work experience in business, technology, and entertainment.   She has worked with Fortune 500 and 1000 companies as well as she has extensive experience in advancing small entrepreneurial companies to the next level.  Dr. Jones has also had the opportunity to work in all vertical markets such as retail, healthcare, entertainment, marketing, and finance to name a few.    

Dr. Jones is a highly creative Global Sales and Business Development Executive who leads teams maximizing sales effectiveness, forges lasting relationships, and takes revenues to new levels in diverse settings – ranging from startups to large multinational corporations. Driving force behind transformational change through fast growth, mergers, and acquisitions; leveraging a unique blend of innovative/technical/business skills. A Big-picture thinker with a talent for building programs from scratch, cultivating lucrative business partnerships, and devising process improvements to consistently exceed the expectations of discerning customers. A motivational leader who cultivates winning teams articulates direction and easily adapts to diverse audiences – drawing upon extensive experience gained as a professional actress.   Dr. Sonja Ann Jones has extensive business and technology experience.  Here technology focus has been business intelligence, analytics, information management, and cybersecurity in the software industry.

Course Description

This course will explore the principles of electronic commerce. This course will focus on business, technology and society. The following concepts will be studied in this course:

  • Introduction to Ecommerce
  • Ecommerce Business Models and Concepts
  • Technology Infrastructure for Ecommerce - Internet, Web, Mobile Platform, Apps, Payment Systems, Security
  • Ecommerce in Business and Social Issues - Marketing, Advertising, Social Media, Ethics
  • Ecommerce in Action - Online Retail and Services, Content and Media, Social Networks and Portals, Supply Chain

What to Expect in this Course

This course will be in Canvas and it will cover one chapter a week.   It will be expected that the chapter is read as well as the homework assignments be completed on a weekly basis.  The technology required for the course is a device that can access the canvas material and has capabilities to do web conferencing for remote work or to contact the professor via office hours.    This course will have a variety of exercises and homework.  It will also have quizzes, discussions, a paper, and exams.

Other Relevant Course Information

This course requires dedication to studying.  All tests, quizzes, and exams will be open book.  However, note it is very important to be familiar with the material since the exams will be timed and taken in class.  Be sure to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about the material.  Also, be sure to notify me and communicate with me about any issues you may face with deadlines.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health.
