Introduction

Financial & Managerial Accounting, 4th Edition Authors:	Weygandt, Kimmel, & Kieso (COC Package)

My name is Talar Hanounek. I have a master’s degree in professional accountancy. I have taught this course for many years in different colleges. This course is a hybrid  eight-week course; therefore, it would be a bit challenging and requires a full commitment from students, but at the end is it is rewarding. We will meet two days a week, Monday and Wednesday from 7:00 pm to 9:25 pm.

Some of you might ask: "Why would I want to study accounting? Chances are, I'm not going to be an accountant so why should I waste my time? "

First, it's important to understand that accounting is a language used to communicate where a company stands and how it is doing. This communication is relevant to many different groups of people inside and outside of the organization, including employees, managers, owners, investors, and creditors to name a few.

Accounting information possesses a very important attribute: decision usefulness.  If you think about it, all the groups mentioned above make numerous decisions every day. Why is that?  Because at any given point in time, resources are constrained.

Course Description

Presents the study of accounting as an information system, examining why it is important and how it is used by managers, investors, creditors, and others to make decisions. Covers the fundamental principles, theory, and applications of accounting to record business transactions through the accounting cycle, including the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, the financial statements, and statement analysis. Includes issues relating to asset, liability, and equity valuation, revenue and expense recognition, cash flow, internal controls, and ethics. Designed for transfer majors in business disciplines.

What to Expect in this Course

This course is a hybrid  eight-week course; therefore, it would be a bit challenging and requires a full commitment from students, but at the end is it is rewarding. We will meet two days a week, Monday and Wednesday from 7:00 pm to 9:25 pm.

Canvas is the Learning Management System. Students will work on the learning objectives within  the provided deadlines. Each week, we will cover one (1) chapter or one (1) exam in the class. The course is designed in such a way that all students need to cover and are responsible for, posted on the Module section of Canvas. From the Home Page, students can choose their Chapter (Module). Students should begin from the top by reviewing posted PowerPoint presentations for the subject related to the chapter that we covered at the class the same week. Then, if they needed or wanted to acquire additional information, they could go over different Learning Objective explanations. All related links and activities are posted as part of the Module. Once we cover the chapter in class, students can start working on related chapter homework assignments which are posted on canvas.

Finally, students must register with Wiley Plus via Canvas and establish an account in order to be able to complete homework assignments and Quiz activities. The very first-time students click on a Homework and or Quiz link, they will be asked to register with Wiley PLUS. Students should use their accompanying Access Code for this registration.

Types of Assessments

  • Homework/ Assignments:

Homework assignments count collectively for 150 points of the possible points for the course (15% of the final course grade). Students must complete all homework before taking the quiz and/or exam over the material. No homework will be accepted after the final due date listed. Completion and comprehension of the homework are critical for success in this course. Homework problems are to be completed via Canvas in the WileyPlus, the textbook publisher's site. Students will receive automatic feedback and will be able to correct answers and resubmit homework as needed in order to master the material. Take the opportunity to learn from the feedback. This will increase your comprehension of the course and will prepare you for the exams.

  • Quizzes:

Quizzes are part of our knowledge implementation. Students need to complete a quiz weekly which include multiple choice questions. All quizzes are online protected. Students must complete the quiz over the material on the due dates posted in the modules on Canvas.

  • Exams:

There will be in total four exams during this course. Exams will be taken in person during the class time. They will be primarily problem-oriented, and may include objective and or subjective questions. Every effort should be made to avoid missing an exam, as there are NO MAKE-UPS. If an exam is missed, it will be given a score of 0. Under an extenuating circumstance and its support, with appropriate documentation, an opportunity for a make-up exam might be granted.
