Introduction

I want to welcome you to BUS 201, Principles of Accounting I. My name is Heaven Warner and I am your professor for this fully online course. I am a Full-Time Accounting & Business Professor. I have a Bachelors Degree in Accounting and a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) with a focus in Accounting. Both of my degrees are from the University of Houston. I am also in the final stages of my doctorate at Northeastern University.

I hope you are as excited about this course as much as I am. We are going to learn about the fundamental principles, theory, and applications of accounting to record business transactions through the accounting cycle, including the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial statements, and statement analysis. I am also a face-to-face professor at College of the Canyons.

Our course CANVAS Shell will be available on the first day of class. Please accept the invitation from Canvas in your official school email account to get started with this course and to set up your account in Canvas. Our Canvas Course Management System is found at mycanyons.com. After setting up your account, login to the system and search for this course as soon as possible and introduce yourself to the class. Write a few sentences about yourself and the reason that you are taking this course and attending College of the Canyons. Also view the introduction module and complete the introductory activities.

Course Description

We are going to learn about importance of Principles of Accounting I. This course is going to help you have a stronger understanding of Principles of Accounting I and ethical dilemmas organizations face in today's business world. It will present accounting as an information system, examining why it is important and how it is used by managers, investors, creditors, and others to make decisions.

What to Expect in this Course

This is an 100% online course, where a reliable internet will be needed for participation activities such as online gaming sessions and group work to review key concepts. All work will be performed within groups (if you choose) or independently. Online office hours outside of the scheduled group sessions will also be available to ask specific questions regarding the homework or course content.

We will be completing 11 chapters during the course. Therefore, we will be covering a chapter per week. Exams for the course are every two weeks, so that the exams cover small amounts of content at a time. Students will be expected to prioritize and keep up with the curriculum. Students will need working internet, microphone, and a webcam in order to complete this course. On the days of class, students will need to have their webcams on in order to show they are actively participating, as participation points are given for the course. Students are only allowed to miss three classes. Once three classes are missed, students are dropped from the course. On peer group days, students must meet online through zoom with their assigned group to complete homework problems.

Textbook Information

Financial & Managerial Accounting, 3rd Edition (Canvas will only work with 3rd edition access code is required for the course).

Textbook should only be purchased through class instructions from the professor. The textbook is specifically designed only for those students who take it at College of the Canyons. If the incorrect textbook is purchased due to not following instructions given by the professor, students will only be allowed to stay in the course once the correct textbook is purchased.

DO NOT SET UP THE TEXTBOOK YOURSELF, IT MUST BE COMPLETED WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE PROFESSOR AS THERE ARE PARTICULAR INSTRUCTIONS.

Other Relevant Course Information

Taking an online course is different from taking an on-ground course from a technological perspective. You will attend a virtual classroom through Canvas,COC's Learning Management System. All students must login to the course on Canvas on the first day of the semester and complete your Student Introduction Discussion #1 to avoid being dropped as a no show. Thereafter, students must routinely login to Canvas throughout the entire course - at least three times a week - to read class materials, obtain assignments, read announcements, and communicate with me and other students. This entire Course is in CANVAS. All assignments, discussions, quizzes, exams and projects are to be completed in or turned into CANVAS. The entire course is outlined for you to follow in CANVAS. I send class updates and notifications through the Announcements tab within our class shell, so please enable and check this area.

You can access Canvas by typing cv.canyons.edu into a web browser. Once there, you can read and follow the instructions for logging into Canvas.

You can also access Canvas user guides, tutorials, and helpful tips for navigating and using Canvas. You must understand Canvas to succeed in this course. I strongly urge you to read the Canvas user guides and view the tutorials if you are unfamiliar with how Canvas works. For any Canvas-related questions or technical assistance, please call the Canvas Student Support line at (661) 362- 3344 during college business hours, or (877) 889-9052 for support at all other times. I require that you personalize Canvas by adding a photo as an avatar that will appear in various areas of the course. I do not require that your avatar be a photo of you. Rather, you may select any appropriate picture. Remember that your avatar will display on Canvas for all of your courses, not only this one. The way you find this CANVAS Course is to login into CANVAS.

After you Login, you should automatically be on the Dashboard page. On the Dashboard Page, you will see this course.

Click on this Course, labeled Online Principles of Accounting I.

When this course opens in CANVAS, you will automatically be on the Home Page and you will see the entire course outlined for you.

Academic Integrity Exams and Quizzes (Proctorio):

All exams and quizzes (if any), will be taken online using CANVAS, which you can find on the home page or under the tab Quizzes. During exams, I will activate software called Proctorio that prevents test takers from opening a second browser tab, printing, cutting-and pasting, and doing a variety of other things/activities on the computer. In addition, you must take exams in front of a functioning web camera with a working microphone. This anti-cheating software is only compatible with Google Chrome and, thus, students in this course must use Google Chrome when taking exams. Since all quizzes and exams use Proctorio, please make sure the computer you use for this class has a webcam and functioning microphone. If your computer does not have a webcam, you will not be permitted to take this course. Last, you could also purchase an external webcam and/or microphone.

Time Management:

Organize your time: Use a planner to make a schedule for this course including all due dates and exam dates. Include your fixed responsibilities such as work, family obligations, and any personal appointments in your calendar as well.
Self-awareness: Don't overschedule your time. Be realistic and allow for breaks and free time so that you don't feel guilty taking breaks and to ensure you do not get burnt out. The best time to do your virtual coursework is when you have the most energy. Distance learning is difficult enough without trying to accomplish it while not at your peak performance level.
Commitment: Making your course a routine and plan time to check your course consistently throughout the week (3 credit course = 9 hours dedicated to the course each week).
