Hello, I am Bob Maxwell, the instructor for this class.  In this class, you will learn how to analyze financial statements to evaluate the financial resources and results of a company’s operations.  We will be looking at different financial tools and processes that managers use to make better decisions.  The focus in this class is different than BUS 201 – in BUS 201 we looked at how to record financial information.  In BUS 202, we will focus on how to analyze and interpret that financial information.  For those of you not planning on becoming accountants, I think you will find this class more likely to be something you will actually use in your careers.

Course Description

BUS 202 Presents the study of how managers use accounting information in decision-making, planning, directing operations, and controlling. Focuses on cost terms and concepts, cost behavior, cost structure, cost-volume-profit analysis and budget analysis. Includes issues relating to cost systems, cost control, profit planning, and performance analysis in manufacturing and service environments. Designed for transfer majors in business disciplines.

What to Expect in this Course

This is a hybrid class that will meet remotely once per week through Zoom.  Zoom sessions will be used for participation activities such as online gaming sessions and group work to review key concepts.  Students are expected to participate in all weekly class sessions and points will be awarded for participation.  Zoom sessions will not be used for lectures – instructor lectures have been recorded and will be available online for students to view prior to the class Zoom sessions.  This class is a hybrid class and only meets for 50% of the class time of a regular 5-unit course.  For the other 50% that you would normally be in class, you are expected to spend watching the prerecorded lectures outside of scheduled class time.  Online office hours outside of the scheduled class sessions will also be available to ask specific questions regarding the homework or course content.

Studying accounting can be confusing.  Where do you start?  There are new terms, concepts and sequence steps for different activities within each chapter.  Trying to study the entire chapter at one time can be overwhelming.  The learning objectives build on each other, so it is important to get the concepts down early so you can understand and complete the homework. 

This course is organized by chapter, with a module in Canvas corresponding to the related chapter in the textbook.  We will cover about one chapter per week.  Each module has been further broken down into "chunks" based upon the individual learning objectives in the chapter.  Each "chunk" is for one of the learning objectives and contains the links to the related eText, additional resource materials, and homework related to the content in that learning objective.  Each module will have between three and six learning objectives, or "chunks."

The modules are designed for you to start at the beginning and click "next" as you progress through the chapter.  Following this sequence will allow you to:

  • cover the early learning objectives first and build your knowledge for later learning objectives;
  • read the course content in smaller segments that are easier to digest than the entire chapter;
  • work on homework assignments directly related to the content you just read to reinforce your learning process;
  • plan your study time around smaller time blocks that can be spread out over the week.

Following the sequence in the modules will allow you build your knowledge sequentially and assess how you are doing before moving on to the next learning objective "chunk."  You are still free to create your own study plan and are not required to follow this sequence, but I think for many of you this approach will help you use your study time more effectively.   Accounting is a skill that gets better as you practice, so you can expect to spend several hours per week working on homework assignments.

Types of Assessments

All assignments – participation, homework and exams – will be completed and submitted online.  Students will be assessed through:

  • weekly online class meetings using Zoom that will include participation assignments,
  • weekly online homework assignments that include multiple choice questions and problems, and
  • online exams that will each cover several textbook chapters and include multiple choice questions and problems.

What you Need to Know about Required Course Materials

We will be using WileyPLUS from the publisher for many of the online resources and homework, so a WileyPLUS access code is required.  If you purchase the textbook from the COC bookstore, the WileyPLUS access code should be included in your textbook packet.  If you purchase the textbook elsewhere without the WileyPLUS access code, you will need to also purchase the access code online directly from the textbook publisher.

If you used WileyPLUS in your BUS 201 course, then you should already be set up with access – the code you used for BUS 201 is good for one year to cover both BUS 201 and BUS 202.  If you have any questions about the access code, please send me an email at

How Do I Get Started in the Course?

  • The class will be available on COC’s Canvas course management system by the first day of the semester;
