Introduction

Welcome to Business Law.  We will learn and have fun simultaneously!  

Course Description

1. Explain the historical development of the law, operation of the court system and

sources of commercial law.

2. Explain the social, political and ethical implications of the law and their application

to actual and hypothetical business transactions.

3. Distinguish between torts and crimes and describe the purpose of criminal and tort

law.

4. Evaluate when a promise is enforceable, the elements of a contract, performance,

and the remedies available in the event of breach.

5. Distinguish between contracts governed by the Uniform Commercial Code and

those governed by the common law of contracts.

6. Analyze cases. Identify issues and apply the appropriate legal rules to the fact

patterns to reach defensible legal conclusions.

7. Categorize the types of government agencies, powers and functions, controls

through congressional action, executive action, and the courts.

8. Differentiate the relationship between state and federal systems, jurisdiction, and

the importance of alternative dispute resolution methods to the participants.

9. Explain how cases progress through the court system from problem, to filing, to

trial, and appeal.

10. Appraise the relationship between law and ethics.

11. Describe the various agency relationships and the duties and liabilities of agents

and principals.

12. Describe the Constitutional basis for federal government regulation of business,

including limits of government power.

13. Explain a corporation’s legal structure and differentiate it from other forms of

business organization, the meaning of limited liability for the owners; describe the

legal relationship of the various stakeholders.

What to Expect in this Course

In this course, it is assumed that the student has certain technological requirements:

  • Student has working computer and knows how to use the computer;
  • Student has reliable, high speed Internet connection;
  • Student can navigate on the Internet using browser software;
  • Student has some technical capacity to solve computer-related
    problems.
  • Student has some computer skills, such as basic document creation and
    handling (how to cut/copy/paste from one document to another, how to create and save documents in Microsoft Word), how to attach documents to e-mail messages, how to create and save a graph/chart/diagram, etc. in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • How to make a PowerPoint presentation with audio
  • How to use a web cam and microphone.
  • How to video record and take photos and upload them.
    If even one of the above does not apply to you, then the student should consider taking a traditional face-to-face class rather than this online class.

You will explore different types of law using news articles.  

Types of Assessments

We will have exams, online discussion boards, and written assignments.  

Textbook Information

Business Law Today by Roger LeRoy and Miller and Cengage Mindtap lab will be used in class.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
