My name is Maral Markarian. I am you instructor for the CAWT 132 - Medical Office Finances course. 

This course uses Canvas and MindTap for all activities. Please log into Canvas before the end of the first day of class and post your presence to the attendance forum. Further instructions about the course will be outlined in the Modules section of Canvas. Read all the information posted in Modules in Canvas.

Course Description

This course examines the various financial methods used in medical offices and hospitals for a variety of duties. Topics covered include but are not limited to health insurance payment system, codes, forms, billing for office services as well as procedures, electronic claim submissions and clearinghouses, maintaining accounts receivable, and aging reports. 

What to Expect in this Course

This course requires considerable time commitment and organization. Although you may set your own hours, students must stay active in the course and communicate regularly with peers and instructor. Technology needed will include a computer (PC or MAC), reliable internet connection and browser (preferable Google Chrome for Canvas), Cengage Unlimited account.

All assignments will be done in MindTap. Assignments will be accessed through specific links in Canvas. Assignments MUST be completed on a COMPUTER. Smart phones, tablets, iPads etc. are not compatible devices and will definitely create problems.  

Types of Assessments

All assignments are completed in MindTap to be accessed through Canvas. Assignments include T/F, multiple choice, typing in, as well as some research. The textbook can be rented after having purchased the Cengage Unlimited code, the e-book is included with the purchase of the code as well as PowerPoints for each chapter which are also included in Canvas. Student will read the chapter and/or corresponding PowerPoints and complete the assignments as outlined on the Weekly Assignment Schedule provided in Canvas. 

All assignments must be submitted by their corresponding due dates. Extensions for due dates are not available. Extra Credit work is not available.

Students MUST have a Cengage Unlimited Code and join the course through MindTap to be able to complete the assignments. 

Cengage Unlimited may be purchased through the College bookstore or directly from Cengage. MindTap will be accessed and the class can be joined following the purchase of the code or activation of the 14-day free trial. The code is usually less expensive when purchased directly from Cengage. Please do your research before you purchase. 

Students may rent the textbook for a minimal charge either directly from Cengage or from the Chegg Website

Student may also need Microsoft Office 2016 or higher. (This is not mandatory but beneficial) 

Instructions for Microsoft Office free download is provided in the Announcement section of Canvas.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
