Introduction
Hello, and Welcome to Chemistry 151! I am Dr. Hind (Hend) Ali, and I will be your instructor for this course. I am so excited about this 8-week coming semester. I aim to make chemistry an accessible, understandable, and enjoyable learning experience. I care deeply about my students' learning and success and offer all students equal learning opportunities. I do my best to create an excellent, safe, inclusive learning environment. I hope you all succeed; see you soon, and have a great semester!
Course Description
Welcome to Chemistry 151- 4.0-unit CSU, UC transferable course! This is a one semester preparatory course for CHEM 201 and provides intensive foundation in problem solving, basic atomic theory, stoichiometry, nomenclature, states of matter, and solution chemistry. Laboratory experiences will enforce principles learned and will familiarize students with proper handling and maintenance of gravimetric and volumetric equipment. 4 units: UC: CSU transferable.
Prerequisite:
Math 060, or its equivalent as determined by the COC Assessment Center.
Student Learning Outcomes:
LECTURE
1. Analyze chemical problems and chemical reactions according to stoichiometric methodology.
2. Examine the forms and states of matter, the structure of the atom, arrangement of electrons, and how this relates to the organization of the periodic table.
3. Differentiate between the essential features of covalent and ionic bonding.
LABORATORY
- Investigate chemical reactions with chemicals, scientific glassware, and instruments in a precise, accurate, and safe manner.
- Analyze chemical data, including graphical manipulation, and formulate meaningful conclusions based on the chemical data.
What to Expect in this Course
Remember, we will not meet online or in person for lectures, but we will meet biweekly in person for the lab. Attendance in your biweekly lab section is mandatory to turn in, receive credit for that week's lab, and take the scheduled quizzes and lecture exams.
Expect to be busy and expect to check in often! I will use Canvas and your college-issued email account as the primary methods of communication for the course, so you must check your email and the Canvas site every day. Things change quickly in a chemistry course, so you must ensure you're current.
The estimated time spent on this course is fifteen hours per week, in addition to the time spent in prelab lectures.
I will post the module weekly on Canvas on Sundays, earlier if possible. These modules will have all of the information for the week. I expect you to log into the course Canvas, study the PowerPoint presentations, or watch the pre-recorded lectures, if any, and turn in any assignments.
Additionally, I expect you to log into Adopt to complete your assigned homework.
What you Need to Know about Required Course Materials?
More information will be available on this in our course syllabus, but briefly, you will need:
- Regular access to a reliable computer with a stable, high-speed internet connection. You will need the following software on your computer:
- Internet browser (Chrome works best with Canvas)
- Microsoft Word (you can download the Microsoft Office Suite for free) as part of your my.canyons email account
- Adobe Acrobat Reader. You need to be able to open, print, and save PDF files. You need a current version of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF files.
- Canvas access using your Canyon student email address.
- Lab Manual: available as a PDF to be printed in each weekly module in Canvas or pre-printed at the COC bookstore for (~3$)
- Lab Goggles: Available for purchase in the bookstore. These MUST be purchased by the second lab; without them, you will not be allowed to participate in the laboratory, and it will be marked as an unexcused absence/0.
- Scientific calculator: No graphing or programmable calculator will be allowed.
Types of Assessments
There will be various types of assignments throughout the semester; here is some information:
Homework assignments will be accessible through Canvas for free and without accessing code. There will be 14 homework sets due on designated days at 11:59 pm.
Quizzes will be taken during the first 15 minutes of the lab meetings on specific days. There will be 5 quizzes throughout the semester, with the lowest quiz being dropped.
Midterm Exams will be taken during the first 70 minutes of the lab periods as scheduled in the syllabus; there will be 3 midterm exams.
One cumulative final exam will be taken during the last lab meeting. You must take the final exam to pass the course.
Lab Reports: Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, there will be 14 lab reports this semester. Each report will be turned in in person on designated days, as shown in the syllabus. Our first lab meeting will cover more details about the lab reports.
