Introduction
Welcome to the online version of Chem 151 at College of the Canyons! My name is Mr. Tom Gisel. Like many of you, I started my education at a community college. I then transferred to UW-Madison to get my degrees in Biochemistry. Chemistry is important in our everyday lives, but also as a link between so many science fields. After graduating, I worked for several years in various research labs before discovering my love of teaching Chemistry. I’m excited to be your instructor in an online discovery of what matter is and how it relates to everyday life.
This course is designed as a one semester introduction to Chemistry! We will develop our problem solving skills while exploring the "central science". This is a fast paced course with about one chapter covered every week.

Course Description
Welcome to Chemistry 151 – a 4.0 unit CSU, UC transferable course. This is a one semester preparatory course for CHEM 201 and provides intensive foundation in problem solving, basic atomic theory, stoichiometry, nomenclature, states of matter, and solution chemistry. Laboratory assignments will enforce principles learned and will familiarize students with proper handling and use of equipment. UC,CSU transferable; UC credit limitation: Chem 110 and 151 combined, maximum credit, one course. Prequisite for this course is Math 060, or its equivalent as determined by the COC Assessment Center.
Student Learning Objectives:
- Analyze chemical problems and chemical reactions according to stoichiometric methodology.
- Examine the forms and states of matter, the structure of the atom, arrangement of electrons, and how this relates to the organization of the periodic table.
- Differentiate between the essential features of covalent and ionic bonding.
- Investigate chemical reactions with chemicals, scientific glassware, and instruments in a precise, accurate and safe manner.
- Analyze chemical data, including graphical manipulation, and formulate meaningful conclusions based on chemical data.

This class is held on campus and in person, not online as the last few semesters had been.
- Lecture: Tues. and Thurs 11:30 am – 12:50 pm CCSC 110
- Section 61025 Lab: Tues. 1:00 pm - 4:05 pm CCSC 403
- Section 61026 Lab: Thurs. 1:00 pm - 4:05 pm CCSC 403
- Additional Homework: 4- 6 hours a week
- Total of approximately 12 hours per week

To access our Online Homework you will need to purchase a Aktiv Chemistry Online Learning Account. The class will utilize an online homework system. Students must create a Aktiv Chem account when registering or at https://www.101edu.co/ (Links to an external site.). The cost to join the course is $33 and can be purchased through the COC bookstore or through the online interface. Students can preview the course for two weeks prior to purchase. You must register access through our canvas page!
Types of Assessments
Exams: There will be 4 exams during the semester. There will be no make-up exams. In place of a make-up exam your lowest exam score will be dropped.
Quizzes: There will be approximately 11 quizzes given during semester
Homework: Homework assignments will be assigned for each chapter and may be completed on the Aktiv Chemistry platform. Homework assignments will be the basis for quizzes.
Laboratory Assignments: Each week according to the attached schedule, a lab will be performed that consists of either a simulation, worksheet, "dry" lab, or some combination thereof.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
