Welcome to Chinese 101

This introductory course to the Chinese language aims to develop your communicative competence in the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will also be introduced to folk customs, social culture, and geography of China through lectures, films, and real-life experiences. After the completion of CHIN 101, you are expected to be able to basically meet daily needs of survival in a Chinese-speaking environment, and demonstrate an understanding of general aspects of Chinese culture and society as well.

 

Chinese 101 develops linguistic and cultural proficiency at the novice mid level.

This course Introduces Chinese language (Mandarin) with emphasis in developing essential skills in communication. Practice in speaking and understanding as well as reading and writing Chinese characters. Introduces the geography, customs and culture of China. Corresponds to the first two years of high school Chinese. This course has 5 credit units for one semester. Check you@Mycanyons email regularly as important information for this course will be sent. The class section is delivered onlineLIVE distant learning via Canvas/ConferZoom.

This course is not appropriate for native or heritage speakers.

Course Description

In this course, we will cover basic communication skills, such as:

  • Phonetics. Pinyin system, radicals. How to type and write Chinese characters.

  • Brief introduction to simplified and traditional Chinese.

  • Getting acquainted, exchanging names, identity, introduction to family relationship

  • Greetings, names., relationship

  • Family & relatives

  • Family size

  • Common jobs. Talking & asking about languages, nationalities/native country

  • Education levels, kinds of schools, students

  • Exchanging Personal Info, talking & asking about where to live

  • Common daily activities

  • Shopping and preferences (sizes, colors, prices...)

  • Telling price

  • Commenting, expressing a change of state

  • Colors

  • Identifying people & things, ssking and talking about prices., expressing need and desire

Besides talking about these topics, we will cover basic Modern Chinese grammar, sentence structures and various patterns.  

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Communicate using Mandarin Chinese at the novice mid-level according to the ACTFL guidelines.
  2. Delineate basic personal and family information, social, historical, and cultural characteristics of the Chinese worlds.
  3. Analyze the relationship between perspectives, practices and products of the Chinese culture at the novice mid-level.

  • Understand a conversation or a story composed chiefly of the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax studied.
  • Sustain a conversation on the topics studied, using vocabulary and expressions in structurally correct sentences.
  • Analyze and synthesize the principles of syntax introduced and apply these principles.
  • Compare and contrast the culture of China with other cultures.

What to Expect in this Course

Each week, you will be assigned a number of book sections to study and exercises and class and home activities, specially prepared by instructors on Canvas. These are both accessed online. There is no paper textbook or workbook. . 

Various audio listening and video watching to practice the language.
