Introduction
I am a life long film viewer and love to go to the Movie Theater.
Course Description
This course is a critical survey of the motion pictures
both as a medium of mass communication and as a
developing art form. Analyzes representative feature
films as to genre, technique, aesthetics, and
sociological impact.
What to Expect in this Course
Types of Assessments Weekly Outlines and Film Comments Each week there will be assigned readings from your text book for the class. You are to read the assigned chapters and complete 2-3 page outlines for each chapter read. Outlines must be typed and submitted via Canvas Remember, you are allowed to use your outlines during your final exam, they are your study guides and your test notes. If you miss one class I will accept that outline at 50% credit. I will not accept any other late outlines. You have to be present in class to receive credit for the outlines. Each outline is worth 9 pts If you attend every class, turn in the assigned outline on the day it?s due, pick up that outline at the end of class and receive full credit for the outline you will be excused from the final exam At the end of each outline please include a summary of the film viewed during the prior class. A short summary of the film and how it related to the chapter in the text Final Paper Each student will write a final paper that will be discussed during the midterm. Please remember that your final paper is worth 40% of your final grade. In Class ASSIGNMENTS There will be a number of opportunities to view films in class. If you miss the class that the film is viewed you will not be allowed to make up the ASSIGNMENT. Outside Class Extra Credit During the semester, I may offer extra credit for outside class viewing. Remember this is extra credit, you are not required to attend any outside class films. Some of the films are shown locally but many are outside the Santa Clarita Valley. Again, you are not required to attend any outside films for extra credit. Hasley 101 There is no eating or drinking in Hasley 101. If you find anything under you seat of in the aisles please throw it away after the film. Talking and cell usage of anytime is not allowed. All laptops and cell phones must be off during the class Film Content Many of the films shown in the Cinema class are R rated films. I will introduce each film and discuss it?s content. If you have any concern regarding viewing R rated films please contact me to discuss this issue face to face or via email.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
