Throughout this course, we will explore the identification and characterization of pathogens, learn essential laboratory techniques, and understand the clinical implications of microbiological findings.

Course Description

Our studies will cover a range of topics involving clinical microbiology laboratory functions, conventional and automated diagnostic testing methods, including bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections. We will focus on diagnostic methods, infection control, and the development of effective treatment strategies. By the end of this course, you will have a solid understanding of how microbiology plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing infectious diseases.

What to Expect in this Course

During this course, you will have lectures weekly every Wednesday, and online attendance is mandatory.  The MLT/CLS program is approved by the California Department of Public Health/ Laboratory Field Services and requires documentation that students attended the required number of hours of each instruction session.  The class is 3 units and requires at least 9 hours of additional time, in addition to the lecture, to read and review concepts discussed in lecture.  

You are required to have a computer, a webcam, microphone, internet access, and access to Canvas where your instructor will post all of the course materials, including assigned homework. 

Students will have weekly quizzes, exams, a group project involving case study presentations, and a final cumulative in-person exam.

Types of Assessments

You can expect proctored online quizzes, various written assignments, a group project, and cumulative final exam.
