Introduction

Dear Learners,
I'm professor Jane Arnett. Welcome to your COMM C-1000 Online/Live class. I am glad to see all of you in this class. College of the Canyons is a very close community and I would like this to be the best possible experience for you. As we go through the course, feel free to contact me, if you have any questions and or concerns. Please read the course syllabus for important information about how we will communicate, and etiquette of online expectations.
I know you are experienced at working on the internet, reading e-articles, and communicating with your friends online. We will utilize those skills you already have in a unique way, and I hope you learn some more techniques. You have to check in by coming to our first meeting on June 8th at 7:30AM (Pacific Saving Time), Monday, otherwise I have no choice but to drop you and give your place to one of the wait-listed students.
This is a short-term intensive, and one-hundred percent online section. That means we will be meeting every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for 5 weeks. In those 5 weeks we must cover materials usually covered in 16 weeks, which means you have to invest more time in Zoom Class and online to pass the class. That's almost 10 to 15 hours per week. You have to finish weekly requirements by the week's deadline.
In our first meeting we will go over all coursework, questions, assignments, the syllabus, and unclear subjects. All assignments are due by 11:59pm on the due date, except for Speeches. Speeches will be presented in in class in front of a live audience of you classmates. Students are evaluated on the quality of work completed; one is evaluated on what one does and does not complete. The State of California has implemented some specific requirements regarding your speeches for you to pass the class. We will go over those specifics on the first day with reminders through the session.
After reading the syllabus, let me know if you have any questions or concerns. The expectations, guidelines, responsibilities, and assignments will be discussed in breakout room with your classmates an d then reported to the class to assure understanding.
The virtual classroom will be available for entrance on the Monday.
All students are required to have their own valid COC assigned e-mail address for this course. Please note your classmates and I will communicate with you through this e-mail. Hence, you should check this email regularly during the course.
The following are some guidelines and requirements that will help you successfully navigate and complete this class:
- Check your computer status. Students should have access to a computer with minimum requirements. You will need a camera and a microphone. Otherwise, you should get to the habit of using a library or TLC computers.
- Word Processing program is necessary. Google Docs will be available through Canvas.
- Access to Canvas for the OER Free Textbook.
As you know, we have a short time to cover our learning objectives, make sure you are prepared and ready on day one. Make sure you participated in Canvas orientation.

Online\Live classes work best for me as I moved to Nebraska. I have a good sense of humor. Also, I appreciate topics that are more imaginative. Try to think of topics that would fit your skills and that will be of interest to the class and me.
I will send an email to the class one week prior to the start date with additional information, including the syllabus. It will include Zoom meeting dates and our class schedule of assignments.
