Introduction

I'm professor Arnett. I've been teaching communication classes for 44 years. Online\Live classes work best for me as I moved to Nebraska. I have a good sense of humor. Also, I appreciate topics that are more imaginative. 

This class will develop your skills for working for speaking in public.  We will meet online via Zoom to present your speeches. You must be present for the entire Zoom meeting.

 

Course Description

This course examines the principles and practices of public speaking, especially speech organization and development, research, audience analysis, presentation skills, listening, and the use of language and ethics for the development of informative and persuasive speeches. CSU & UC (3 CREDITS)

What to Expect in this Course

Canvas provides an excellent platform for online education.  The material is broken into Modules to cover each course topic.  Within the Modules you will find the textbook material, videos of my lectures and packets to go with the videos.  You will also find the chapter quizzes and the learning exercises that correspond with that material.

You will be required to give 3 speeches and submit 3 outlines to go with each speech.  Please follow the specific outline format. Research is required for the Informative and Persuasive speeches. There will be 3 exams covering the material and a term paper analysis/critic of an outside speaker.

The syllabus is on Canvas.  For the best view of it, you should download it.

Types of Assessments

Assignments consist of speeches with outlines, quizzes, learning exercises, exams and a term paper.

Textbook Information

The textbook is found in Modules. you may read it through Canvas or download it.

 

Other Relevant Course Information

Our Zoom meeting dates are: August 8th and 31st, September 7th and 21st and October 5th. You must be present for all meetings.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
