Welcome to CONST-120, California Mechanical Code! My name is Jean-Claude Olivier. I am your instructor for this course. I am currently a Senior Inspector with the City of Los Angeles assigned to the Code Enforcement Division. I obtained my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from California State University Northridge. Course Description

This course will introduce the California Mechanical Code as it applies to construction and maintenance of buildings regulated by this code. 

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and scope of the Mechanical Code.
  • Assess the types of equipment and general requirements that apply to mechanical installations.
  • Differentiate between the various air supply and exhaust requirements regulated by the code.
  • Evaluate the regulations for conveying exhaust products, different airs, and combustion products.
  • Differentiate between and apply the code requirements for the installation of specific appliances and boilers.
  • Evaluate which regulations apply to various types of general refrigeration systems.
  • Distinguish between fuel gas piping, hydronics, and process piping and assess the applicable codes and regulations. Evaluate career opportunities that require knowledge of plumbing systems and codes, including designers, contractors, real estate and property managers, insurance, manufacturers, suppliers and vendors, and various building owners.

What to Expect in this Course

This course will be conducted in the Hyflex modality. 

In the HyFlex modality, Instructors teach classes live on campus in a classroom, and will welcome students to join in person or via Zoom. You will have the choice to join me in the classroom or log in and participate via Zoom during scheduled class times. The Zoom link is listed under the class meeting information section of the syllabus and is posted on Canvas.

Each week, we will cover a chapter of the California Mechanical Code. Class sessions will be broken up between lecture, class assignments/ participation, and learning assessments. After class, related homework which could be a quiz or short writing assignment will be assigned along with a discussion board post to encourage further discussion on the topic that was covered in class between students and myself. A group project will allow you to work together to showcase your understanding of the Mechanical Code, items that fall under its jurisdiction, regulatory process, and how related HVAC installations are affected. A mid-term and final exam will be administered. You should expect to spend 6 to 8 hours weekly on this course.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center
