Textbook Title:We will be using an Open Educational Resources (OER) text for this course! There is NO COST to you as a student for the text all the materials necessary for this course are FREE to you and will be available through Canvas in an online format. If you wish to purchase the Counseling 110 OER text in a hard copy format, you will be able to do so in the bookstore for a small fee (this covers the print cost which comes out to less than $5). The Counseling 110 OER Text is also available in print in the Library and TLC at the Valencia and Canyon Country Campus on reserves. Book is available here: www.canyons.edu/ztc

Dear Student, Graciela Martinez

Welcome to Counseling 110 - Career & Life Planning! I am looking forward to working with you while we engage in the career exploration and planning process.  You will take part in different career assessments to learn more about yourself, your strengths, interests, skills, abilities, values and personality preferences while researching the world of work to see where you may "fit" in best.  You will take part in many self reflection exercises and ask yourself some important/deep questions in regards to where you see yourself in the future or where you'd like to see yourself in the future and how to get there!  This can be an overwhelming yet fun process.  I encourage you to keep an open mind, be honest and true to yourself and enjoy the process.  I am here to support you on your journey!

I will be available and accessible by email and online through CANVAS/ConferZoom. 

Course Description

Career & Life Planning 110 introduces self-assessment tools to identify college majors and careers by clarifying interests, skills, abilities, values and personality type. Students will examine the decision-making process, self-management, life roles and goal setting. Includes a review of labor market trends, career research, interviewing skills, resume and cover letter writing and job search strategies. 

This is a 3-unit letter graded course. This class is CSU transferable and fulfills the CSU GE Area E - Lifelong Learning and Self Development requirement and also counts towards elective units for an associate degree.

What to Expect in this Course

This course will provide you with the skills necessary to find the "BEST FIT" career(s) for you. The goal of this course is to assist you in the decision making process of selecting the "BEST FIT" career path for you. You will engage in the journey of self assessment, exploration, and research.  

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  1. Understand the career planning and decision-making process
  2. Find a career path and/or major consistent with individual skills, values, interests, and personality style
  3. Recognize the skills needed to succeed in a particular occupational field
  4. Gain cover letter, resume writing, and interviewing skills
  5. Have a better understanding of oneself

You will be expected to log into Canvas daily to keep up with class announcements, assignments and weekly discussions.  You need regular access to a computer to be successful in this class, access to internet service and email.  All communication for this course is done through Canvas!  I encourage you to download the CANVAS App onto your phone so you may receive push notifications and stay up to date with announcements, assignments and grades!

This class is taught as an 5 week accelerated course.   It is very important that you are ready an online class and if you are in doubt, please assess your readiness for this online class. 

Distance education is not for everyone, please exam your personal learning style preference.  You should be self-motivated, independent, enjoy spending time on the computer, have the ability to articulate your voice in written language and have the time required to complete the class.
