Hello Everyone and Welcome to Counseling 110! Are you ready for a Fantastic Journey?

I believe that Career life planning is a continuous lifelong process of identifying and re-assessing your options in regard to the changing world of work and your personal needs as you experience life and transitions in life. Discovering Why you want to do something is the key. Understanding who you are and what you like to do, can motivate you to find your purpose.

The goal of this course is to engage you in the process of designing your personal Career Pathway, which best fits you, and to invest in yourself by understanding, assessing, and mindfully establishing a plan of action.

Course Description

Career & Life Planning 110 introduces self-assessment tools to identify college majors and careers by clarifying interests, skills, abilities, values and personality type. Students will examine the decision-making process, self-management, life roles and goal setting. Includes a review of labor market trends, career research, interviewing skills, resume and cover letter writing and job search strategies. Online classes may appear easy, but students are often surprised by the amount of work these courses require. You need to stay highly motivated and organized to do well in this course. This course moves quickly, and students are required to take lengthy career assessments.

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  1. Understand the career planning and decision-making process
  2. Find a career path and/or major consistent with individual skills, values, interests, and personality style
  3. Recognize the skills needed to succeed in a particular occupational field
  4. Gain cover letter, resume writing, and interviewing skills
  5. Have a better understanding of oneself

Student Learning Outcome (SLO):

At the end of this course, it is expected that students who have regularly participated and completed all assignments will be able to:

  • Assess and evaluate personal characteristics including their skills, values, interests, abilities, and personality traits as they apply to academic, career, and personal decisions throughout one's lifespan. 

What to Expect in this Course

During this semester, you will be completing the following activities: 

  1. Student-lead discussion posts: You will interact through online discussions with classmates each week related to the current unit being discussed.
  2. Individual homework assignments covering course material, handouts, online research, and assessments.
  3. In our face-to-face meetings, I will lecture and you will interact through collaborative learning activities.

Types of Assessments

Student-lead discussion posts: You will interact through online discussions with classmates each week related to the current unit being discussed. I will be assigning individual homework assignments, handouts, online research, and assessments to cover course materials. You will also complete quizzes at the end of each unit. 

Textbook Information

We will be using Open Educational Resources (OER) materials for this course, which is a free digital textbook. A digital copy will be listed in Canvas.

Other Relevant Course Information

Canvas Information:

We will be using Canvas as our online classroom and you will be expected to log into Canvas various times each week in order to keep up with discussion boards and weekly assignments. I will be posting announcements, assignments, and discussion items that you will be expected to participate in, at the beginning of each week. Keep in mind that all assignments and discussions must be completed by the posted due dates. Canvas information @ https://coc.instructure.com.

This course is a Hybrid course. Meaning we will be meeting face-to-face in a classroom and online.

  • First Day of Class: The first day we meet in person is on Tuesday 8/17 @ 6:55 AM

  • The course will be available on Canvas on Monday 8/16

All coursework will be completed online using Canvas. Be sure to complete the Canvas orientation to help you familiarize yourself with this online learning tool (listed below).

Online Counseling

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
